Jared Knowles's Summary

During the course of my PhD program in Political Science I am focusing on the subfields of American Politics and Political Methodology.

I am interested in the intersection of politics and geography. Focusing on education, I am interested in the variation in local governance of schools across space. What factors influence electoral conditions in school board races? How are they different from national and state electoral conditions? What roles do school boards play? What determines this?

I am particularly interested in the variation that occurs in non-urban school board elections and especially the electoral context of rural school board elections.

My professional interests include statistical modeling of education data, creating compelling and engaging visualizations to illustrate education datasets to stakeholders, and engaging in policy relevant research to improve educational practice and student outcomes. I am also interested in expanding the adoption of GIS tools within the edcuation sector to improve both administrative and instructional practice in the K-12 space.
