The Media Artists WiFi Survival Workshop was a special project tutored by The Masterpiece Cleaners media artists group. Twenty 2nd year Media Arts students from the AKi Academy of Art and Design, Enschede, The Netherlands were taken to the wild dutch countryside of Sneak.
The students were taught to locate wireless networks and test network penetration techniques. They were then instructed in hands-on workshops about optimizing the efficiency of consumer wireless devices through hardware hacking. The hardware was deployed into pre-surveyed locations in order to connect two locations 3km away from each other.
The purpose of this workshop was to teach the necessity of the internet as a means of research, communication and medium for media and computer arts expression. In almost any, even sparsely urbanized environment, it is still possible to locate and access gateways to the internet, which should not bar the media artist from working in any environment.
