Jeffrey Barke is the senior developer and information architect at theMechanism New York where he oversees all aspects of application development. Jeffrey is committed to W3C standards-compliant HTML and CSS encoding, the practice of unobtrusive JavaScript development and object-oriented PHP scripting. Jeffrey also brings a rigorous approach to relational database design to ensure that the solutions developed for clients in North America and Europe are robust, scalable and operate with maximum efficiency. A firm believer in the open source ethos with a preference for the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) environment, Jeffrey is also a Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD).
Originally from Milwaukee, where he studied philosophy, urban geography and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and worked in the nonprofit sector creating data maps for social advocacy and desktop applications for community-based organizations, Jeffrey joined theMechanism in January 2007.
Jeffrey has spoken at an Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) conference and taught workshops on mashup developtment at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He currently co-organizes and often speaks at the New York Web Standards Meetup Group on topics including accessibility, microformats, the Google Maps API, best practices in AJAX-driven user interface design and natural search engine optimization.
