Web Developer and Tech Writer
Austin, Texas Area
My background is in technical writing, but I have a knack for web design and web-based application development. This stems from my interest interface design, information architecture, and new media, which are all concepts I discovered through my school work. Outside of my position at Polytechnic University, I have worked as a freelancer and am comfortable taking on independent projects.
• Technical communication: FrameMaker, RoboHelp, and Dreamweaver

• Other languages: Familiarity with C, C++, and Cocoa
• Database software: MySQL, Navicat
• Graphic design software: Photoshop, Illustrator
• Operating systems: Windows (through XP), Mac OS X, and UNIX (via Darwin in Mac OS X). Familiarity with Linux.

July 2007 — December 2007 (6 months)

Online management system upgrade including a content management system, email newsletter and online donations capability.
The content management system I designed simplified a number of routine, time-intensive tasks for the clinic’s in-house web designer. I also extended the clinic’s online payment processing system to enable online donations via the clinic’s website. All of this was done using HTML, Javascript, Cascading Style Sheets, PHP and MySQL.
This project was an opportunity for me to get a better understanding of human factors and interface design. My goal was to create an interface that feels more like a desktop application than a web-based application.

Guidance Advising and Administration System
Guidance is a web-based application designed to track student data. It also provides advisers with the ability to keep a per-student to-do list, take notes during advising sessions, and email those notes to students in the future. I built Guidance using HTML, Javascript, Cascading Style Sheets, Ruby on Rails, and MySQL.
The Humanities Department adviser at Polytechnic inspired this project. Working one-on-one with her allowed us to craft a solution that is both functional and user friendly. The experience gave extensive insight into how users interact with software and websites, resulting in an application that I believe is both innovative and intuitive.

Website and Content Management System
The Cy-Fair TSTA commissioned this website as part of the group’s efforts to reach out to their constituency. The site was designed to inform and educate visitors about current TSTA events, and issues affecting the teachers of the school district.
I built this website in consultation with Frances Smith, the Association President, and Randy Johnston, the group’s Organizational Development Specialist. The content management system allows Association members to keep the website updated and was designed for users with no technical knowledge. I also provided technical documentation to help Association members learn and use the application.
This project was challenging because of the technical restrictions placed on the design by the Association’s web host, which required me to construct the system using only older technologies, including PERL scripts and flat text files.
