Jeff Lindsay’s Summary

My experiences in academia, corp. research, and innovation, coupled with the experiences of many I've interviewed, are shared in a new book for those wishing to innovate or encourage innovation. Conquering Innovation Fatigue by Jeff Lindsay, Cheryl Perkins, and Mukund Karanjikar (John Wiley, June 2009) explores the 9 major fatigue factors that can hinder innovation and shows how to conquer them. It also provides energizing factors from original work and new case studies to help individuals, corporations, and policy makers. A unique aspect is the focus on innovation at the personal level, where unintended barriers to innovation are easily created.

I have a dream job as an innovation consultant at Innovationedge, where I am Dir. of Solution Dev. Our CEO is Cheryl Perkins, one of the "Top 25 Champions on Innovation in the World" according to BusinessWeek, and former Chief Innov. Officer of Kimberly-Clark. We help clients strengthen innovation, deal with disruption, and bring new products to market. I emphasize low-cost IA strategies and tools for strengthening innovation ecosystems (Value Networks).

In working with corporations as well as inventors and start-up teams, I bring the perspective of an inventor and corporate researcher (over 100 patents), former professor, and patent agent. I feel this helps me communicate across the innovation community and understand the potential market for innovations.

After receiving a Ph.D. in chem. eng. (BYU, '86), I spent 7 years at the Inst. of Paper Science and Tech. (Georgia Tech campus). I joined K-C in 1994 to advance an exciting breakthrough in tissue (uncreped tissue). I studied patent law on the side and became a patent agent in 1997.

At K-C, I founded a community of practice called the Intellectual Property Chapter, and served as chair for 3 years. I also helped form and guide a cross-sector group aimed at protecting business method innovations, where we laid a foundation for K-C's RFID estate.

Jeff Lindsay’s Specialties:

Intellectual property strategy, Value Network Analysis (based on training from Verna Allee and Oliver Schwabe), open innovation, new business concepts, patent drafting, patent searching, university relationships, external partnerships, long tail concepts, radical innovation, defensive publications, IP.

Jeff Lindsay’s Experience

  • Director of Solution Development

    Innovationedge

    (Management Consulting industry)

    August 2007Present (2 years 4 months)

With my background in consumer products, patent strategy, and R&D, I work with clients to strengthen innovation and better protect new businesses.

My experience in working with innovators (universities, companies, and individual) and organizations to drive innovation is reflected in a forthcoming book: Conquering Innovation Fatigue by Jeff Lindsay, Cheryl Perkins, and Mukund Karanjikar (John Wiley & Sons, ca. June 2009). It explores innovation at the personal level and identifies the nine major "innovation fatigue factors" that hinder innovation, distributed across three levels: personal, organizational, and external (e.g., tax policy). Solutions and work-arounds for these factors are presented, along with energizing factors such as insights on IP strategy, disruptive innovation, and DaVinci-style open innovation. The "Horn of Innovation" model turns the old funnel of innovation upside down for more targeted, "just in tune" innovation. See innovationfatigue.com.

  • Corporate Patent Strategist and Senior Research Fellow

    Kimberly-Clark

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; KMB; Consumer Goods industry)

    May 1994August 2007 (13 years 4 months)

This Corporate role involves guiding our many intellectual asset (IA) committees in their systems and strategies, leading by example in identifying and pursuing IA opportunities to pursue, helping to build strategic partnerships with outside groups to bring in the IP that we need for business growth, guiding efforts to pursue IA that deals with disruptive innovations, leading efforts in business method patents (including our RFID estate), driving defensive publications as a key strategic tool, and enhancing K-C's position as a thought leader in IP areas.

  • Associate Professor & Assistant Professor

Institute of Paper Science and Technology

(Educational Institution; 201-500 employees; Research industry)

    January 1987May 1994 (7 years 5 months)

Faculty member at IPST, conducting research and advising graduate students (Ph.D. and M.Sc. students). Great fun! Research focused on fluid mechanics and heat transfer in paper-related systems and porous media. Use gamma densitometry and flash x-ray radiography to explore multiphase flow and heat transfer systems, including high-intensity dewatering of paper and fiber slurry flow. Investigated anistropy for flow behavior in paper systems, displacement dewatering technology, pulp suspension flow, ceramic paper properties, etc. Developed new courses on flow through porous media and on recycling technology. Also taught solid mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, etc. Received the Olmsted Award for one of my early technical papers on the anistropic permeability of paper. Received the Teacher of the Year Award in 1992.

Jeff Lindsay’s Education

  • Brigham Young University

    B.SC. , Chemical Engineering , 19771983

Took two years off (1979-1981) for an LDS mission in Swizterland (German-speaking: Zurich Switzerland mission, which included parts of Germany and Austria).

    Activities and Societies:
    AIChE, chess club, College Bowl
  • Brigham Young University

    Ph.D. , Chemical Engineering

My research was in the Combustion Program at BYU with Dr. Paul Hedman. Applied Laser Doppler Anemometry to explore the fluid mechanics of a simulated pulverized coal combustor system with a swirled flow inlet.

    Activities and Societies:
AIChE, Tau Beta Pi, chess club
  • University of Utah
