President's Commission on Care for America's Returning Wounded Warriors
April 2007 – August 2007 (5 months)
Created on March 6, 2007 by President George Bush, the nine-member Commission, co-chaired by former U.S. Senator Robert J. Dole and former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna E. Shalala, was tasked with completing a comprehensive review of the military’s healthcare system by the end of July. After eight public meetings, 23 site visits to military and VA centers across the nation, 50 briefings by medical experts and agency officials and the completion of a first-of-its-kind survey of injured service members, the commission approved six recommendations that make sweeping changes in the delivery of military health care and services.
The Commission also created a “YouTube” video of its recommendations which features Commissioners Jose Ramos, Marc Giammatteo, and Tammy Edwards. Ramos and Giammatteo were both wounded in Iraq, as was Tammy’s husband, Chris Edwards. The video can be viewed at www.youtube.com.
