Jay Fraser’s Summary

As President/CEO of Tracer Detection Technology my responsibilities are strategic direction, operations, managing our programs with federal agencies & National Labs, negotiating licensing and R&D agreements, and dealing with potential commercial partners and customers. We are involved in counterfeit detection and covert surveillance technologies. I've also coordinated International “special projects.”

I believe that solid strategic thinking is at the core of any successful business or product. My roots are on Madison Ave. where I worked on some of the toughest client assignments and was taught by some of the top strategic minds in the country (the best, IMO, still advises me as my strategic collaborator).

In the late 80s I began consulting, applying my strategic and marketing skills to high-tech companies. In 1990 I was introduced to the Dean of Engineering at SUNY Farmingdale. I have since focused on transitioning technologies from the R&D environment to commercialization and end-user adoption.

I enjoy speaking to large groups. My presentations have covered topics such as technology transfer, bioterrorism, homeland security and entrepreneurship. In May 2008 I presented a paper on my company's anti-counterfeit solution at the IEEE International Conference on Technologies for Homeland Security. I was the Keynote speaker at the meeting of the Federal Laboratory Consortium on the subject of “A Small Business Perspective on Technology Transfer" (http://tinyurl.com/dg3g7l). I recently spoke on the "Strategic Management of IP."

I have knowledge and insight into a range of homeland security and law enforcement issues. In June 2008, I received a certification in “Enhanced Threats and Risk Assessment” from Texas A&M's Engineering Extension Service. I also write about issues related to homeland security, policy implications and technologies used in the Global War on Terror for ThreatsWatch.Org, the web-based publication of the Center for Threat Awareness (CTA).

Jay Fraser’s Experience

  • President & CEO

    Tracer Detection Technology Corp.

    (Security and Investigations industry)

    April 1995Present (14 years 4 months)

Tracer Detection Technology Corp. is a private company commercializing two areas of patented technology. One addresses the problem of authenticating documents, products, and labels (versus counterfeits) using random patterns of materials with unique optical characteristics that occur randomly and are matched to a machine-readable code.

The second technology was successfully demonstrated under contract from the U.S. Department of Defense and is now performing on additional programs. Presented the anti-counterfeit solution at the 2009 World’s Best Technologies Showcase in Dallas on 3/25/09.

"Having extraordinary people already on the team makes geographic distance an irrelevant factor."

Not a serial entrepreneur. Just a persistent one.

  • Principal

    Powershift Management LLC

    (Management Consulting industry)

    June 1986Present (23 years 2 months)

THERE WAS A 12 YEAR BREAK IN THIS FROM 1996-2008

I have re-launched my consulting practice (under the name of Powershift Management LLC) that will focus on strategies for technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, leveraging my 35 years of marketing and strategy experience and my 18 years of technology transfer background. Powershift's objective is to help companies develop growth strategies through the development or acquisition of new technologies and intellectual property, and to help entrepreneurs in general. This will also include my work in homeland security and my expanding interests in counterterrorism technology and policy. Currently helping selected companies introduce their technologies to elements of USG.

I was a judge in the IC2 Business Plan competition at the WBT in March '09 and hope to get at least one of the companies into an incubator this Spring. I have been a lecturer on technology transfer, technology policy and IP management (leveraging 19 years of experience). Currently, I am preparing a presentation on the role of new technologies in Creating a Corporate Strategic Architecture" and I am also preparing a paper for presentation titled "Technology Transfer: A Strategic Imperative for the 21st Century."

Rarely do you work in a company that many years later do you realize how much of an impact it had on you and your career. B&B was such a place. I was privileged to work there, even though it was so long ago, and for such an all too short time.
