I got my start in 2003 doing spyware research with my best friend. The FTC is using some of it as evidence in federal court. Wired.com did an article about us. There's just something about high school kids chasing backweb scammers.
We tried to parlay this into an emerging market: desktop anti-spyware tools. We called ourselves ThreatSense and got angel funding from an extremely ironic source. Then, our programmer bailed on the project. Microsoft entered the market, Webroot got big-time funding and that was that. So we called it a lesson learned and sold what we did have to Eset. (See NOD32's real-time reporting of new threats by desktop users.)
