My career has been quite a mashup of technology and business. In business or operations positions, I enjoy being the go-to tech guy. Most operations employees only use computers because they have to, but I really try to be an advocate for more computer use and automation of tasks. If I can help operations employees become a little more self-sufficient with computers, it can reduce the number of formal help-desk requests and make the whole process more efficient. If I can get the employees helping each other with tech requests, that's really a home run.
On the tech side, I like to think I have a better understanding of the business world than most. I was about three quarters of the way to my degree in management when I decided to stop pursuing that route of education. I believe I've learned more about both business and technology through experience than I ever could have by continuing with college. In the past 10 years, I've owned a few very small businesses. In being responsible for every aspect of a business, I've become intimately familiar with the problems and opportunities involved in running a company.
That said, I think the position I hold now is perfect for my skill set. I work in the "Product Development" group where I'm responsible for identifying business opportunities and coordinating the technology efforts to make those opportunities a reality. I have the opportunity to work with both sides of the company, and occasionally, I'm even able to get my hands dirty with a tech project.
