Jared Jackson's Projects

  • Diffusion Case Study

    • January 2011 to November 2011
Team Members: Jared Jackson, David Ducrest, Thomas Drapela, B. J. Wimpey, Jef Fredyl, Steven Arnold, L. Renee Stander, Jim Moore, Tom Robertson, Casey O'Donnell, Mac Smith

In this case study, students take on the role of a physician's assistant in the local emergency room of a small town, where patients are being adimitted for chlorine gas exposure in the wake of a train wreck in the middle of town in which a chlorine tanker car ruptured. Students 'fly into' the lungs (all the way down to an alveolus) to explore the ill effects of chlorine gas exposure on the diffusion of oxygen into the blood. While in this alveolus, they measure concentrations of oxygen in both the air of the alveolus and in the blood, and learn about the three factors governing diffusion, namely: membrane thickness (the thickness of the respiratory membranes), available surface area (the available surface area of these membranes for diffusion), and concentration gradient (the differences in the concentrations of oxygen in the inspired air and blood). In doing so, students learn the principles of diffusion and are able to compare the effectiveness of three different treatments.

  • Boyle's Law Demo

    • August 2011 to October 2011
Team Members: Jared Jackson, Thomas Drapela, Jef Freydl, B. J. Wimpey, Casey O'Donnell, Tom Robertson

Objective: Demonstrate Boyle's Law in a meaningful and memorable way through interaction with a physical sensor, using Unity3D and Vernier's Go!Link USB sensor interface.

Boyle's Law: Boyle's Law describes the inversely proportional relationship between the absolute pressure and volume of a gas within a closed system, where temperature remains constant.

Demo: In this demo, students setup and manipulate a barometric sensor linked to a 3D laboratory scene. Real time changes in are simultaneously (1) demonstrated using a 3D pressure chamber containing (enlarged) gas molecules, (2) reported numerically, and (3) plotted over time. Additionally, plot data may be captured for later analysis outside of the demo.

  • Osy Osmosis

    • January 2009 to March 2011
Team Members: Jared Jackson, Casey O'Donnell, Stephen Borden, B.J. Wimpey, Steven Arnold, Vicky Costilla, Georgia Hodges, Jim Moore, Steve Oliver, Tom Robertson

Osy Osmosis is a fun game for all ages where you must help Osy stay safe as she navigates through her world collecting stars. Using your finger, tap in the direction you want Osy to move, but be careful, as you progress, more dangers will present themselves. To help Osy, you will use osmosis to keep her in balance with the world around her.
