James Nix’s Experience

  • Senior Developer

    Midland Loan Services

    (Public Company; Financial Services industry)

    November 2007Present (2 years 1 month)

    ■ Fully documented an old system for synchronizing Servicing databases across the enterprise (GUID Sync). This included Visio flow charts of the process and documentation about the inner workings.
    ■ Wrote a prototype replacement system for GUID Sync that would reduce the over and under matching using SSIS. This included writing several custom SSIS Dataflow components for Address cleanup.
    ■ Provided ongoing support for old GUID Sync issues while management deliberated how to proceed in replacing the old system.
    ■ Architected a more robust and error free replacement to an existing document extract tool and then lead a team to develop it.
    ■ Architected and built a replacement for a very slow document import tool. The resultant tool allowed the processing of an order of magnitude more documents per minute.
    ■ Lead an effort to evaluate several ASP.Net Component suites for use across the enterprise.
    ■ Re-Indexed an entire database to increase performance by 70% - 80%.
    ■ Pushed for better internal security standards and demonstrated an attack against an internal system that led to SysAdmin access. This lead to an increased focus on information security.
    ■ Was given the responsibility to test the security of our applications.
    ■ Technologies used were .Net (VB.Net and ASP.Net), SQL Server 2000 and 2005 and SSIS.

  • Consultant

    Genesis 10

    (Computer Software industry)

  • Client Developer

    Datacore Marketing

(Privately Held; Marketing and Advertising industry)

    October 20052007 (2 years )

    ■ Architected and developed an automated system for Datacore client H&R Block to process check fulfillment on the Send-A-Friend program. This system processes over $25 million in checks per year. The system was created under budget and made a profit for Datacore.
    ■ Architected and developed several custom SSIS Dataflow components to allow all Datacore developers to use complex data processing tasks easily. At the time of creation the components saved Datacore $74k per year.
    ■ Took an 11 hour process and recreated it as an SSIS component. The new execution time was 8 minutes. This allowed Datacore to meet a key timeframe for data processing for one of its clients.
    ■ Worked with a team of people to audit Datacore’s business processes in an attempt to streamline day to day operations.
    ■ Created several customer service tools to enable representatives to serve phone customers better and allow them to request changes to customer records. Changes would then be reviewed by Account Service representatives who could approve or deny the requests.
    ■ Guided decisions on securing data in transit and at rest for H&R Block.
    ■ Technologies used were .Net (C# and ASP.Net), SQL Server 2000 and 2005 and SSIS.

  • IT Analyst

    (Government Agency; Government Administration industry)

    March 2001October 2005 (4 years 8 months)

    ■ Worked with team to deploy Tidemark, a database application designed to capture and report on Development data. Tidemark replaced multiple other systems and provides a central location for the data. Tidemark spans almost all Departments, each of which had systems that Tidemark replaced.
    ■ Created several ASP.Net (VB.Net and MS SQL Server) applications to interface with Tidemark’s data and provide advanced features for scheduling, assigning to inspectors, and reporting on building inspections as well as advanced copying of building permits.
    ■ Developed innovative ASP.Net (VB.Net and MS SQL Server) application to automate the Development Review Committee (DRC) process, a time consuming and complex process, which resulted in elimination of excess paperwork, enhanced productivity and coordinated communication among five (5) departments.
    ■ Assisted in securing the externally facing network and set up periodic network scans to ensure that the external and internal networks remained secure.
    ■ Investigated and fought off a Denial of Service attack on our network.
    ■ Technologies used were .Net (C# and ASP.Net), SQL Server 2000, Classic ASP and Access.

    ■ Developed and optimized an automated solution for cleaning and importing large flat files into MS SQL Server. Reproduced existing paper reports on Intranet using the imported data.
    ■ Re-designed and re-developed existing insurance rate calculator to provide enhanced usability and efficiency for the end user.
    ■ Created solution to consolidate firewall log information received from the firewall via email.
