James is a member of the board of directors for the Denver Art Museum and served as a Mayoral appointee on the "Architect Selection Committee" for the expansion of the Denver Art Museum. In 2003, James received the "Juanita Ross Gray Award for Community Service" presented by the Denver Public Library.

Outside of his professional and community interest, James has a deep interest in equestrian sports, motor sports, cycling, and antiquarian book collecting.
