The history of information is also a history of control.
Thanks to the Internet, the barrier to self-publishing is lower than ever. I want to make tools that continue to lower that barrier.
My work as a core developer of Django focuses on giving anyone -- even non-programmers -- the tools to create dynamic, content-driven websites. I see my work around journalism as an extension of this: I help to make sure that we truly serve our community by giving them a place to discuss the news and make their own opinions heard.
Django, Python, web application scalability, SQL (especially PostgreSQL), JavaScript (including frameworks like jQuery, Dojo, and YUI), CSS, XML/XHTML/HTML, and web development of all shapes and sizes.

I was Whiskey Media's "Django guy." I worked on Django itself, helped the company best use Django to save time and money, and helped the other engineers with my knowledge of Django's internals. I also helped internal ideas and needs work their way back into Django itself.

I led development of Ellington, the Journal-World's news publishing platform. Ellington was originally developed for internal use only, but is now a commercial product used by news organizations across the globe. My role was that of a technical lead: I was responsible for the overall design and philosophy of our tools, and I managed a team of about half a dozen other developers.

Sites I've worked on at the Journal-World have won dozens awards. In my time here we've won an AP Managing Editors award for online convergange, nine Digital Edge awards, three Editor&Publisher (EPpy) awards, and numerous Kansas Press Association awards.
Sites powered by Ellington have also won numerous awards: the 2007 Digital Edge awards went to Ellington-powered sites in 7 out of the 9 categories.
