Blogger / journalist / consultant

I am a passionate independent new media professional, based in The Netherlands. I blog, I teach, I consult, I manage web projects, I organize conferences. I'm working predominantly with journalistic, cultural, educational and political organizations that want to use social media to engage in open and constructive conversations.
My main field of expertise is online journalism & social media. I love to use and explore new forms of communication, mashing up services such as Twitter, streaming video, Google Maps and camera phone pictures; I'd probably not use all these things simultaneously, but then again, I just might.
writing for the web, general writing, podcasting, screencasting, blogging, vlogging, public discussion, e-learning

I engage in a range of projects dealing with publishing on the Web.
More specifically, the way the Web changes journalism and how we as a people inform and educate ourselves, unvariably catches my interest. The combination of a thorough abstract understanding of the Web and in-depth technical knowledge about online publishing makes my work stand out.
Examples of past objectives that have put my qualities to a good use:
- Writing & producing articles and multimedia about media literacy, for the 'Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid';
- Teaching online journalism courses at journalism schools;
- Writing and managing web strategies involving social media for various organizations;
- Training staff of various organizations on how to use social media;
- Producing live interactive video on the web;
- Managing journalistic multimedia projects.
Feel free to contact me if you think there may be something I could do for you.

I taught two courses at the J-School of Utrecht, the Netherlands: Screencasting, and Journalism & The Public in the 21st Century, to 3rd and 4th year students. I was invited to do so by Job Twisk, who organises many interesting classes and events on new media at the Hogeschool Utrecht.
Both courses were taught via weekly classes; in addition to that, both I and my students maintained a Wordpress blog. They were taught about recent theories and developments concerning web2.0, new media journalism, the blurring boundaries between professional journalism and user generated content, and so on; on a more practical level, they were taught how to write and maintain an advanced weblog, and how to produce journalistic screencasts and post them online for web viewing and videopodcasting. These screencasts consisted of both recorded screencast snippets as well as existing video, audio, images and self-recorded narration, all using Snapz Pro X and iMovie.

I invented and ran as an editor in chief (under the alias 'Berry', which I still use occasionally) together with my co-editor in chief and partner in crime Erik Jacobs, the popular and high-profile student blog berryenberrie.nl, when I studied at the Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. After some months, we took matters seriously and transfered our Blogger-hosted blog to our own hosted website with domain name, excellently coordinated by our webmaster and technical coordinator Ramon Eijkemans. We decided to quit the blog at its height of popularity by giving a nice party - we each wanted to go our seperate ways; after having run the local student magazine together as well, a year beforehand, it was time to quit student journalism by going pro.
