Journalist/writer/editor
Cambodia
Creative and born curious, I have traveled the world seeking knowledge and experiences. Passionate about journalism and writing from my early years, my aim is to build a career focused on discovery and storytelling.
My strength is in adapting to many different situations and learning quickly: in my young career, I have worked as a writer, editor, manager and producer and lived on three continents.
I moved to Cambodia in May 2008 to take on a position as a reporter in a national daily newspaper, where I covered among other things a border dispute with Thailand and the international Khmer Rouge tribunal. I later helped produce the newest film by Sundance award-winning director Kim Dong-wong, which will focus on sexual violence against children, complacency and impunity in Cambodia, and was inspired by articles I wrote.
I am a journalist with more interests than I can count. As a writer, I have specialized in narratives (literary journalism) and in-depth features that connect trends with the stories of people that impersonate these trends. It was a short step to doing the same thing in film. I've also written on many topics, from local politics to international justice, diplomatic relations, breaking news, crime, science or business.
My career goals are to remain in a creative and leading role while exploring all sorts of media. My passion is first for writing and storytelling, while I also have an interest in film, photography, technology and the online world (blogging, social networks, video games and all ‘geek’ activities). Other interests include traveling, the environment, literature, history and languages.
My interest, for further down the line in my career, is in media management. I enjoy leading a team, working collaboratively with other creative types and giving artistic and commercial direction to a finished product.

I researched, conducted interviews and planned the production of feature and TV documentary films for Cambodia's leading multimedia production & distribution company. Rock's first film, currently in production and directed by Sundance award winner Kim Dong-won, deals with the issue of sexual violence against children in the country and the complacency surrounding these crimes. The film centers on a brutal rape case I first researched as a newspaper reporter.

May 2008 — May 2009 (1 year 1 month)
I covered Cambodian national news daily. I was called on to write on all sorts of topics, but covered more in depth diplomatic and military relations with Thailand (and the countries' current border dispute), as well as the Khmer Rouge international tribunal. I have revealed an illegal compulsory draft of villagers into the Cambodian army and have alerted public opinion to the rape and murder of two girls virtually ignored by authorities.

The "class preparatoire" is an exclusively French system, which can best be compared to the first two years of a five-year master's program. It's an intensive prep program after high school that prepares students for the extremely competitive exams to enter prestigious, specialized private colleges. The "class prepa" provides a strong liberal arts background, and the specialized college takes care of more specific training,
My field was economics with a minor in math, and I prepared to enter business school. I studied 40 hours a week of economics, math, literature, history, philosophy, English and German.
