Shazam (http://www.shazam.com) is a VC funded company that specializes in audio recognition. The company’s best-known commercial application is a wireless consumer service that allows people to identify music over the cell phone, simply by dialing 2580 from the handset.
I co-founded Shazam in December 1999 and was involved in all aspects of starting and building a company: from writing and filing patents, raising capital (US$ 20 million) to hiring the first employee. My initial key responsibilities included the build-out and maintenance of a large database of music (exceeding 2MM tracks). I subsequently worked with the engineering team to shrinkwrap the core technology and license it to businesses worldwide (predominantly in the broadcast monitoring industry). This ultimately lead to a trade-sale of Shazam to BMI, Inc.
