elearning coordinator/researcher at Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp
Gent Area, Belgium
Within the ITM (Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp) eLearning is a growing educational branch and research topic.
One part of my job is to help partner institutes (Morocco, Ecuador, India...) start-up or deepen their own eLearning programs as a consultant. This international collaboration is challenging because these partners all reside in low resource countries, demanding creative technical and cultural solutions. I must admit that this is also the benefit of the challenge.
Another part of my job is getting in-house change management going and getting people involved both in eLearning and in adopting social media. Practically this means I build formal social media courses, redesign face-2-face courses into interactive (of course!) online courses and get people informed about the benefits of Lifelong Learning.
I also took the initiative to start on mobile projects that are linked to Medical projects within ITM. The mobile projects are also very rewarding and opening new opportunities.
Besides the more formal approaches there is a variety of informal learning stimulated by initiatives launched by my colleagues and/or myself. I first got into informal learning while discussing on the internettime.ning community. This was a real eye-opener because it showed me that the way I had been learning all my life was actually a management and educational strategy.
ITM is specialized in Tropical medicine and attracts a lot of International post-graduate students and researchers, also from low resource settings. Inspired by my previous work experience I also incorporate gender and diversity in the design of the courses and the informal learning moments.
So basically I am an (ad-hoc) TELearning researcher and consultant, who presents her work during international conferences and writes papers and articles on mobile learning, eLearning, social media in eLearning with a gender twist and most of the time aimed at low resource settings.
