I've worked on a big industrial automation project related to the automation of an high precision weight and moisture measurement system. The system was based on 1->3 scanners, 2->12m long, with 1 or 2 mobile measurement heads, each head based on one over different possible measurement technologies (ultrasounds, laser, X rays (reflection or transmission), beta-rays, infrared, ecc.). The measurement system was able to acquire and filter data values, compensate them for modelled errors (mechanical, dust, weather, ecc.), compute statistics, generate reports, manage measurement recipes, provide output signals, control actuators for retroactions in a pid process,... and al lot of other things.
