I have the priviledge to lead 3 excellent teams at Linkedin:

- Search at Linkedin is unique. Because Linkedin is a social network, search has to blend your network within each request. Hence the standard cream of the crop approach won't work without serious tweaks. We have built our system on top of Lucene and just recently completely re-architected the entire solution to a distributed system.

- Cloud at linkedin is the service that supports all inquires to the connection graph. The cloud team is responsible to scale the service and build APIs to access the graph for various requests.

- The Data Platform team provides and supports data-driven features. This has mostly three aspects; 1) a platform component such as building up our Hadoop cluster or our distributed key-value storage; 2) creating and providing data derived features for various systems at Linkedin and 3) building data mining systems for matching and recommendations.

As we are often building on top of open sources projects (such as Lucene for search) we do believe in giving back to the community. Here are some projects that we have open sourced:

- Zoie, a real-time search and indexing system (http://code.google.com/p/zoie/).
- Kamikaze, a compression scheme to iterate over sets in a compressed form (http://code.google.com/p/lucene-ext/).
- Bobo, a high performance faceted/parametric search implementation (http://sourceforge.net/projects/bobo-browse).
- Volemort, a high performance distributed key-value storage (http://project-voldemort.com/).
