Down Under Web Miner
Sydney Area, Australia
We design and develop web applications utilising outsourcing model with development centre in Kharkov, Ukraine. This is our official legend told to customers.
Practically we are having fun doing job we are paid for - inventing web services, interfaces and coding in a way 'that it would not be painfully sick for aimlessly lived years'.
We are team of 5 people.
I work with my team which is 7-9 hours behind me from 2001. All we use - brains, hands, CVS and customised by us dotProject.
It is amazing how many things came up during last 6 years which started with PostgreSQL, FreeBSD 4, Apache and PHP 3 and drifted to MS SQL 2000, Win 2000, IIS and PHP 5 (while staying up and running with current code base which is 350K lines of code now).
We will not take a project for 20 people and hire 15 more pretending being big to a potential customer.
We do not write messages 'Your Date of Birth is invalid' while validating data.
Our programs do not 'throw exceptions' to users - we leave part of ourselves in them.

Company was established to complete a single project - proprietary web based system for an aged care business.
It is evolved into Application Server written on PHP. System is live from 2002 when it was serving 5 homes and contained 3 applications. It is serving 51 nursing homes and contains 21 applications now.
We may be and not afraid to be involved into:
- design a slave tablet version of our customer system for nurses - different interfaces taking into account lower resolution and no keyboard, ability to run in landscape or portrait mode.
- build a semantic network / ontology to build residents care plans based on such factors as cultural background, diagnoses, conditions etc. - give customer interfaces collaboratively build it (Protege interface was created by scientists for scientists)

Veritas HA is High Availability Suite:
- Veritas Volume Manager
- Veritas File System
- Veritas Cluster Server
- Veritas Volume Replicator
All above on OS's: Solaris, AIX, RedHat, HPUX
Was interesting to find:
- servers which boot 60 minutes or have tens of thousands of attached disks
- crying administrators who lost TB of data and have no backup
- managers who were trying to measure tech support staff performance based on amount of resolved cases and their complexity.
I was born in a country which is not on a map and I worked for a company which is a history now. Don't be surprised if something I am associated with will disappear in future :)

There were 4-5 of us supporting TELSTRA dedicated web hosting customers - about 300 servers - mix of Compaq (Win) and Sun (Solaris).
My first DIY project was to remove operators from server consoles checking Veritas BackupExec nightly backups (every morning - 300 servers). Servers started reporting results to web service with help of Perl and PHP. Something clicked in the skyes and my next job was with .... Veritas.
Why? Money, strictly Unix job, top technology setups to learn and fix.
