Freelance Strategist

Matt likes coming up with ideas for new projects and businesses and working out if they are viable or not.
If they are, he works to attract the money, knowledge, design, space and people in order to make them happen.
Matt works for himself and for other people.
(He is also part of a rebel alliance of nice, creative businesspeople who overlap on projects and pitch jointly for work.)
The last three years, Matt has been working on a number of city projects. He started two movements in Brighton: BarCamp - introducing the unconference event format to the city, and Slack Space - a movement he started with Charlie Davies (ex- Features Editor at The Face) to make use of all the missing buildings in the city. He runs monthly creative industries network Likemind (with Curtis James and Iain Tait, Poke).
Right now he is working on City Manuals, a publishing project about grassroots regeneration and bricolage (working with whatever materials are to hand).
Recently he's worked with public (eg UnLtd, Make Your Mark), semi-public (Wired Sussex, The Werks) and private organisations (Last.fm, Mint Digital, Dharmafly, 100s of startups in the London and Brighton areas). Mostly strategy work, but also bit work in fields like event design and freelance idea generation for television.
In the past, Matt set-up smallbusiness.co.uk and raised six-figure investment from the likes of Lloyds and Microsoft.
He then founded the quite successful and very well loved Business Bricks website: funded entirely by reader donations (and a big contract with Google).
Social design, social practice, business strategy, planning, negotiation, service design, urban design, regeneration, meatspace, creative direction, branding, idea generation. (All these things have their own Wikipedia pages if you need to look them up there.)
