I enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard immediately after high school and my first duty assignment was the USCGC SPAR and learned that I was really good with paperwork.
USCG Air Station Cape Cod - Otis ANGB, MA
USCG Marine Inspection Office - St. Ignace, MI
USCG Headquarters - Washington, D.C.
USCG Research and Development Center, Groton, CT
USCG Resident Inspectors Office - 378 FRAM Project, - Bath, ME
USCG Group Sandy Hook - Highlands NJ
USCG First Coast Guard District, Boston, MA
I had a choice of going into the computer technology field or working with children when I retired. I choose kids, it was the best decision I could have made and it had rewards that go far beyond the monetary aspects.
I worked in Good Will-Hinckley's cottage and boys regroup program for 2 1/2 years after retiring. I changed jobs for what I thought was a promotion in the social services field and found that it had its is own challenges, which I did not enjoy as much. I wandered for a couple of years, at one point becoming an Office Manager for a Pharmaceutical Company, I was offered an opportunity to go back to working with kids at Good Will-Hinckley. I found that I really loved teaching, was very good at it and eventually became a certified Special Education Teacher.
I am currently the AmeriCorps Grants Program Officer and Emergency Response Coordinator for the Maine Commission for Community Service. I have learned a lot in the past year...AmeriCorps program management, Grant Review and competition procedures, Volunteer Management basics and being part of the the team that is developing the Maine's Volunteer and Donations Management Annex.
What am best at: getting things done, being organized, completing paperwork and working with people. I love to learn new things and enjoy using technology, even when it doesn't always make my life easier.
My goals are to be ready for opportunities that may appear, but to enjoy what I already have.
