April 2008 — Present (1 year 4 months)
I am collaborating with Learning Worlds on a range of projects at the intersection of creativity, business, and global culture, with special attention to the roles that the arts can play in meeting the challenges of an evolving global marketplace. Many leverage arts-based learning, including a major art-science initiative which includes conferences in Chicago (at the Art Institute, in partnership with the Illinois Institute of Technology) and Washington (at Strathmore Hall, in partnership with the Smithsonian's Lemelson Center, the Kennedy Center and the Univeristy of Maryland Smith School of Business) in 2009.

I am the CEO of a small international consulting firm that helps businesses, governments, and the non-profit sector develop creative leaders, effective organizational strategies and dynamic new programs. Among my more interesting projects:
• Creating senior leadership programs to drive innovation and change initiatives at IBM, Siemens, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, among others.
• Participating in the White House Global Cultural Initiative, and creating an East Asia cultural exchange program and implementation plans for the US Department of State.
• Developing a new affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution as the interim CEO of Flushing Town Hall, a center for the visual and performing arts.
• Conducting an environmental scan of the creative ecosystem of the mid-Hudson Valley for the Dutchess County Arts Council and the Community Creativity Foundation.

I am the founding director of Creativity Connection, a program of Americans for the Arts that uses arts-based learning to help businesses surface creativity, strengthen employee leadership and communication skills, and foster high performance teamwork. In the process, we connect the arts in a vital way to the innovation and workforce development challenges of economic growth in the 21st Century, and we develop new sources of revenue for artists and arts organizations.
Creativity Connections partners with an outstanding roster of performers, writers, and visual artists to develop and market a set of programs that are now being used by companies like McGraw-Hill, Johnson & Johnson, IBM and Blue Cross. We also conduct symposia around the country, commission research into the value and effectiveness of arts-based learning, and develop publications, such as the 2006 Journal of Business Strategy "Arts-Based Learning for Business."

Orpheus is the world's only orchestra to rehearse, perform and record without a conductor. I was its chief executive officer.
Highlights of my tenure: collaborating with Itzhak Perlman, Dawn Upshaw, Richard Goode, James Galway, Branford Marsalis and Renee Fleming; performing 20 concerts in partnership with Carnegie Hall; releasing 14 critically acclaimed recordings including the Grammy-winning Shadow Dances; performing in many of Europe's great concert halls; touring Asia 3 times; being the first American orchestra to perform in Hanoi since the Vietnam War; being twice featured in Live From Lincoln Center national telecasts.
My book Leadership Ensemble: Lessons in Collaborative Management from the World's Only Conductorless Orchestra (2001, Holt/Times Books) describes the orchestra's collaborative management and high performance teamwork. Leadership Ensemble has been translated into a number of languages including German, Japanese and Chinese.
