After nearly 27 years as a high tech and medical writer at the Chicago Sun-Times, I left on January 25, 2008.
I opted to take a buyout with one-year's pay. Basically, the Sun-Times became an angel investor in HowardWolinsky.com.
I joined the Sun-Times as a medical writer and worked in the news and features departments and also developed a special section, MedLife. I wrote breaking news and features about socioeconomic and research developments affecting the metropolitan Chicago area and the nation.
Before joining the Sun-Times, I was an associate editor on American Medical News, the AMA's weekly, covering hospitals and reform of the Canadian health-care system. I also worked as a health writer for Florida Today, The St. Petersburg Times and The Kankakee Journal.
Here's my story in GapersBlock.com:

I started in September 2008 as an adjunct lecturer/instructor on the graduate science writing faculty in the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
I am interested in freelancing in high tech, medicine and genetics. This can be with traditional or new media, writing blogs, Web information, speeches, white papers.
I've freelanced for medical publications, consumer as well as professional and trade, including EMBO Reports, the Annals of Internal Medicine and The Lancet. I've also freelanced for The Industry Standard, Wired, WebMD and OnHealth.com.
In 2001, I co-authored, with my wife Judi, Healthcare Online For Dummies.
