HISHAM YOUSSEF, AIA, is Senior Design Manager for International Projects at the world renowned architecture and planning firm, Gensler. He joined Gensler in 1997 with extensive architecture and interior design experience at international design firms. At Gensler, Hisham is a lead client contact for projects in the Middle East.
Hisham completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard University, graduating with liberal arts degree in 1983, and earned his Master of Architecture from Columbia University in 1989.
Immediately on completing his graduate work, Hisham joined Rafael Vinoly Architects in New York City, where he became an integral part of the design team that won the world famous Tokyo International Forum project, one of the last grand projects in Japan - completed in 1996. While at Vinoly, Hisham participated in a variety of institutional projects and competitions including projects in Brazil, Japan and the United States.
Following this stint, Hisham joined the boutique firm of JB+C in New York (1994-1997) where he was responsible for design, management and coordination with international architecture firms throughout Asia Pacific, including Japan and Australia.
Hisham is a dual Egyptian USA national. He currently splits his time between New York, Dubai and Cairo. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He was also guest critic at the New York Institute of Technology, American University of Sharjah, and with pr0gress. He also served Teaching Fellow at Columbia School of Architecture, and Harvard University’s Carpenter Center.
In 2006, Hisham co-founded The Architectural Association of the UAE (aaUAE), and was unanimously elected as its first president from 2007-2009.

Hisham is a dual Egyptian and US national - he currently resides in Dubai and maintains a residence in New York – he travels frequently between Dubai, New York and Cairo. He is a frequent guest critic at the School of Design and Architecture at the American University in Sharjah. He is a registered architect in New York State and a member of the American Institute of Architects.
Hisham developed the design market for Gensler in Egypt and is currently responsible for directing all design and business work in Egypt as well as North Africa.

The Architectural Association, of the UAE, and based in Dubai is an association created to integrate the design community within the UAE. It provides a forum for dialogue across the design disciplines of architecture, interior design, graphics, lighting, advertising, signage, landscaping, art and sculpture, within an architectural environment. It will act as a driver for design excellence, and call for the betterment of everything to do with good and socially responsible architecture, infrastructure and design. Through a series of events, lectures and award programs, the AAUAE intends to raise awareness of the need to maintain high architectural standards to achieve lifestyle sustainability in a country that has the chance to build its future now.
