Owner, Beta Technologies and Internet Consultant
Portugal
In 1993, I happened to be around a national research lab and get involved with the WWW. It seemed to be the "killer application" for the Internet, and finally place it in the mainstream. Of course, I had no idea that less than two years after that I would be starting up a national ISP with some friends :)
In 2004, I happened to come across a brand new thing called "Second Life" and get involved with it. It seemed to be the next paradigm shift in the way business and communication would be done in the 21st century, once it made into the mainstream. of course, I had no idea that two years after that I would be setting up an international metaverse development company with some friends :)
Between 1993 and 2007 I've launched several start-ups in several areas, many related to Internet business (moderately to very successful) but also tried other business models (on-demand kitchen production, handicrafted tiles), as well as giving my support to non-profits promoting social or cultural causes — mostly on management and, of course, IT.
When working on a small company, I usually focus on all those areas that require a certain expertise but that start-ups are not able to provide. On technological companies I run F&A, marketing, promotion, or sales; on non-technological ones, I run the IT department. As a company grows in size, I tend to make sure that all these areas are filled by professionals and usually focus myself on providing IT consultancy.
My education was specialised on 3D visualisation of distributed networked systems. I dropped the "3D" to focus on "distributed, networked systems" for over a decade — the Internet. With Second Life I was able to go back to my early love of 3D!
IT Consultant, systems and network administration, project management, and all sorts of skills necessary to run a successful start-up: from Customer Support, to Sales and Post-Sales, to marketing and PR, branding, and accounting and general F&A.
