G Scott Alamanach Mikalauskis’s Summary

About me:

I'm not easy to categorize. For starters, I have degrees in Humanities and Engineering, a very rare combination. As a result, my intellectual life is a very rich one-- I am as comfortable discussing mideval Hindu love poetry as I am doing vector calculus. Those sort of things have their place, and I enjoy them, but I recognize that they are different from people skills.

I travel a lot, and usually on my own. I go to places like Cambodia and Kuwait and Zanzibar and India. I have lived for short periods of time in Kenya and Thailand. I was in Bogota, Colombia, when Pablo Escobar was running loose, it was the kidnap capital of the world, and a radio station down the street had just been blown up. Not a good place to be. I was in Kathmandu when the people decided they wanted a multi-party democracy, and violent protests broke out. The Nepalese army was called in, and the whole city was under a 24-hour curfew for four days. Also not a good place to be, I ended up fleeing to Singapore. I was in Fallujah, Iraq for a year, working as a civilian contractor. Our camp averaged five incoming rounds a day of one sort or another, and on one occassion a rocket exploded about 50 feet from where I stood. Definitely another bad place.

In cities like Istanbul, Bangkok, and Buenos Aires, I've been known to take long, solitary walks through the neighborhoods, just to see how the local folks actually live. Not knowing the languages in any of these places, that might seem risky. But two things keep me safe: a clear mind, and strong people skills. Those people skills work whether I'm in a manufacturing plant in America, or facing down a con man in Nairobi. They have their roots in my ability to listen. Listening is a vital, teachable skill, one that I've been honing for twenty years. It is much more important than literature and mathematics.
