I'm a tech startup enthusiast.
Currently developing we7's music streaming site, hoping to bring free music to the masses whilst making sure the creative talent behind it can still make a living.
My technical expertise spans mobile technologies, Java and .Net component architectures, and the tools and licensing issues of Open Source software development.
Open-source software tools and licensing issues,
selling software, working out the cheapest way to do things, meeting people, technical staff recruitment, mentoring junior developers, Software Development in Java (esp, Swing, JNI, RMI, JDBC and Java3D), SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Access, Interbase), C# (esp. GUI development and mobile apps on .Net Compact Framework), C++, C, Assembler, Lisp & Python on the Windows NT/XP & Linux platforms.

Doing whatever's needed in a fast-moving startup, including writing code, managing projects, choosing a CRM system and finding new business.

October 2002 — October 2004 (2 years 1 month)
Worked on development of a desktop application (coded in Java & C) for use by reservoir engineers in the oil & gas industry which allowed them to configure, run and query scientific simulations of oil fields. The work involved significant use of 3D graphics (implemented in Java3D), and interfacing to components coded in C/C++ (via Java JNI).
(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Computer Software industry)
March 2002 — October 2002 (8 months)
Worked on development of city-wide traffic control & parking systems in Visual C++, Visual Basic and the Microsoft Access DBMS, including implementation of low-level comms protocols for use over a proprietary wireless network.
(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Computer Software industry)
October 2000 — March 2002 (1 year 6 months)
Worked on development of a key product for this XML tools and consulting company. Involved in design of a wide range components of the product, including networking (over RMI), the relational-database back-end (in MySQL, PostGreSQL, and later Interbase), client GUI and business logic.
Implementation largely carried out in Java (making use of the JDBC, Swing and RMI libraries in particular), and using JUnit and Perl for automated testing.
Development mostly carried out on Windows and Linux platforms. Developed a good knowledge of XML standards, as the product was a tool to aid analysts in the design of complex, interdependant XML schemas and data-types.
Also assisted with manning stand at recruitment events, CV filtering, mentoring of interns and interviewing of candidates.
(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Computer Software industry)

Whilst studying for my undergraduate degree, I worked with Raxco as a junior member of the software sales team (mostly dealing in system-management products for Windows NT/Unix and VMS systems). I took deals all the way through from first contact to closure in addition to passing large leads on to more senior sales staff. I maintained a good sales record and was offered a permanent position on graduation, which I declined in order to study at Oxford University.
