Mahadevan Gomathisankaran’s Summary

Mahadevan graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from Regional Engineering College Trichy, now known as National Institute of Technology, in 1998. He received merit-cum-means scholarship for all the four years of college from 1994 to 1998. This was awarded to the top ten students of every department. He ranked fourth while graduating in his class of 55 students.

After graduating with a BE degree he joined Philips Software Centre as a Software Engineer. He got promoted to Senior Software Engineer in the year 2000. He received an excellent appraisal rating for both the years 1999 and 2000. He submitted few invention disclosures to the Corporate Intellectual Property Committee of which one was selected for patent filing.

He joined Texas Instruments India at the year 2000 as a Software Design Engineer. He worked on "Multi-Core" project OMAP in designing a Resource Manager. He was awarded for excellent contribution to the success of this project. He also worked with Real Teal Data Transfer (RTDX) module of the Code Composer Studio in C28x.

He joined Iowa State University for pursuing his PhD at the year 2002. He was awarded "Premium Academic Excellence Award" which is awarded to the top 10% graduate students joining every year. He joined Dr. Akhilesh Tyagi as a Graduate Research Assistantship and under his guidance pursued his PhD. He was awarded IBM PhD fellowship award for two consecutive academic years (2004 and 2005). The IBM PhD fellowship award is awarded to 50 graduate students every year across the world. He graduated with a PhD in the year 2006 and his thesis was on "Secure Architectures".

He is currently working at Systems Research Center of Intel as a Research Scientist. He works in the areas trusted and secure systems architecture research.

    DISSERTATION RESEARCH:

My thesis proposes and evaluates Arc3D, a 3D obfuscation architecture, which provides Tamper-resistance, copy-protection, and IP-protection. The 3D obfuscation hides the address sequencing, the contents associated with an address, and the temporal reuse of address sequences such as in loops. The software is kept as an obfuscated file system image statically. Moreover, execution traces are also dynamically obfuscated along all the three dimensions. Such an obfuscation makes it infinitesimally likely that good tampering points can be detected. This in turn provides with a very good degree of tamper-resistance.

Memory integrity verification is required to achieve Tamper-evidence in Arc3D. Whereas conventional hash functions could be used to achieve this, Arc3D uses efficient preimage-resistant family of one-way functions. The pipelined version of these functions can achieve 128Gbits/s of hash rate allowing reduction in the trust permiter to onchip L1 cache.
