Giacomo Tufano’s Summary

Judging from my professional life, I have been an accomplished manager of technical people (both individual contributors and first level managers), with a solid technical background on software and operating systems, Internet-related technologies, marketing, sales and executive sales support.
I can be defined as a person that likes to defy convention, very innovative and that uses his imagination to successfully solve problems and conflicts. I have a strong interest in what is new and exciting and this leads me to be very creative when it comes to finding novel solutions to complex problems. All successes in my professional life are related to creating things and leading change in structured organizations. Taking the above into account, Sun and some of my previous employers have assigned me with the role of change agent, a catalyst for the time bound and correct execution of planned changes.
I have been considered brilliant in presentation and communication skills, with demonstrated success both with customers, up to CxO level, and with the trade technical press. During recent years, I successfully managed under, and performed reporting duties to several different country and international Directors and VPs, both in direct and dotted reporting lines.
Sun has been my most extensive work experience, during which I have covered the many roles. After acting as the Country pre-sales Manager, at the moment I work as a people manager for the program office in charge of Quality, Processes, Customer Escalations and Project Assurance in the Customer Services Division of Sun Italy.
Prior to working at Sun, I have held positions in different Companies, ranging from being part of Startup teams, to holding management and individual contributor roles.

  • Italy Global Systems Engineering Manager

    Sun Microsystems

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; SUNW; Information Technology and Services industry)

    October 2006August 2007 (11 months)

The position involved direct reporting to the country Vice President for Sales and Services and indirect reporting to the European Vice President of Systems Engineering. GSE is the “generalist” pre-sales organization of Sun Microsystems. It is in charge of Technical Account Management and, in Italy, also of Technical Bid Management. My full reporting line organization was formed by 33 people, including 2 managers and the Country CTO.
I planned the organization from the ground up and began to drive the transformation from a “reactive only”, products focused structure to a “mostly proactive”, accounts focused one. Meanwhile, I participated in redesign of the sales support processes of the Country.
I left the organization motivated and focused during a reorganization following the change of the Italy VP.

  • Practice Manager

    July 2004September 2006 (2 years 3 months)

Practice Manager in the Client Solutions Organization, the technical organization in charge of pre- and post-sales operations.
I began as manager of the Desktop & Mobility Practice, being at the same time the Solaris Adoption Lead for Italy. Both positions were reporting to the GEM CSO Director, and indirectly to their respective Corporate Vice Presidents. From January 2006, I began managing the “Software Solutions Practice”, an integrated structure formed by pre-sales and professional services engineers for Sun Software products, in an organization comprised of three practices reporting to different managers and with a total sum of approx. 40 people.

  • Product Lines Manager

    Sun Microsystems

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; SUNW; Information Technology and Services industry)

    January 2003July 2004 (1 year 7 months)

Responsible for Product Marketing for Sun Italy. I managed the group responsible for marketing activities related to products, sales trainings and other Field Product Marketing related activities.

  • Presales Manager

    Sun Microsystems

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; SUNW; Information Technology and Services industry)

    July 2001December 2003 (2 years 6 months)

ince 2001, I have been pre-sales manager in various groups and positions, all related to software and Internet technologies. I also designed, started and managed for two years the iForce Ready Center of Sun Italy, the Customer Briefing and Benchmarking Center of the company.
During this time I also was the architect, designer and project manager for the CRM portal of the intra- and extranet of Sun Italy. What started as a simple “engagement tool” for the pre-sales organization grew to become the Flow Manager and the CRM of Sun Italy, encompassing almost all divisions of the Italian branch. This portal has been discontinued during 2007.

  • Senior System Engineer

    Sun Microsystems

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; SUNW; Information Technology and Services industry)

    February 1999June 2001 (2 years 5 months)

I began my career in Sun Microsystems as pre-sales engineer, working in Internet related projects with large accounts. In this position I was the technical architect for many of the largest Internet portal projects developed for Sun Italy's customers (major telcos, banking, ...).

  • Consultant

    Inteltec

    (Public Company; Computer Software industry)

    January 1997January 1999 (2 years 1 month)

I worked as consultant with/for many customers. The main one was Telecom Italia, where I worked on several different projects in both Rome and Naples. I was also responsible for the I*Net infrastructure of the company.

  • Owner and General Manager

    AVirt LLC

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Computer Software industry)

    January 1996December 1998 (3 years )

AVirt was a Utah-incorporated company (formerly an Italian company fully owned by myself, named Artigiani Virtuali - “Virtual Artisans”) that created a proxy software product for Windows. The name of the proxy is (now) aVirt Gateway Server (and was formerly known as Spaghetti Proxy). I sold the company to my US-based partners, to better focus on my professional goals in the Italian market. At present, the brand is owned by an UK-based company (cfr.: http://www.avirt.com/).

  • General Manager

    Synapsis Srl

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Internet industry)

    January 1995December 1996 (2 years )

Synapsis was a spin-off of the IT group from Promos SIM SpA (a Naples-based brokerage company) founded as an Internet Service Provider. The company was owned by the holding of the Promos (Promos Holding SpA) and by myself. During the operation of this company I also sat in on the board of directors of Italia.com (a consortium of Italian small to medium ISPs).
This company was pioneering the ISP market in the South of Italy, actually being the first one South of Rome. We grew very fast during the first year, reaching aprox. 15 employees and consultants at the beginning of 1996. After this year, telco operators started getting directly involved in the Internet infrastructure business, which made the business environment very difficult for small and medium ISPs. I left in the end, because I was in disagreement with shareholders regarding the need to sell the company to a bigger company, and managed to sell my shares back to the holding two years later.

  • IT Manager

    Promos SpA

(Public Company; 11-50 employees; Capital Markets industry)

    July 1992December 1994 (2 years 6 months)

Worked as Information Systems manager for this brokerage company (now a Bank). During this period the company completely rewrote, under my lead, the software used for their activities management.
This same software product was also used by Promos International (an Ireland-based company of the same group, with branches in Switzerland, UK and Malaysia), for which I was also in charge network design and maintenance.
