We developed namesdatabase.com, a profitable Web site used primarily to reunite old friends and classmates. With no employees (i.e. just us two founders) and no outside investment, we grew virally from nothing to over 20M members and approximately 1M in revenue at acquisition. We sold to Classmates.com, a division of United Online (NASDAQ: UNTD) for $10M cash in March, 2006. I was involved in everything at Opobox, with full (and sole) technical responsibility. That is, I wrote every line of code and handled all systems administration. After acquisition, the site continued to grow, and now has over 33M members, with a large international userbase.

learnection developed educational software to increase parental involvement in elementary (primary) education. I formulated the concept, raised initial capital, and then managed a team of 6 through initial software development, which I participated in as well. We then hosted a public beta in schools in two states. Further expansion was cut short due to lack of funds. I continued to run the company for another year myself, developing a scaled down product that could grow virally on a teacher basis (as opposed to via direct sales on a school or school district basis). Ultimately, I moved on and dissolved the company when my next company began to take off.

Virtual Education Space (VES) was an $11M non-profit project funded by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to develop software very similar to that which we developed at learnection (my first company). I tried (unsuccessfully) to sell learnection to VES, and then came on board to help launch VES. I was the technical team lead in charge of turning a software spec into reality in a very short time frame (literally a few months). This task involved both developing new software and integrating major enterprise applications, including CA's portal software and Sun's iPlanet suite. I also managed all the hardware, which consisted of about 30 servers (Sun & HP) and associated equipment. After initial launch, I continued to manage the technical rollout to all 300+ school districts and 1M+ students in MA. I left the project after that, at the same time VES was officially subsumed into the MA Department of Education.
