  • Visiting Professor of Computer Science

    Drexel University

    (Educational Institution; Higher Education industry)

    20062008 (2 years )

I was the course coordinator, course developer, and principal instructor for Drexel's Computation Lab when it was first offered to all College of Engineering freshmen. This three-term sequence of one-credit computer science labs used Maple to introduce students to computer programming, symbolic-numeric computation, scientific visualization, computer simulation, and data analysis.

Building on Prof. Jeremy R. Johnson's pilot project (ca. 70 students), we expanded the Computation Lab into a massive college-wide offering (ca. 700 students). We solved the problems of scale by building a team of a dozen faculty members and teaching assistants, and by inaugurating Drexel's use of Maple TA for online testing, thereby eliminating the need for hand-grading. Together, my team and I successfully transformed the fledgling Computation Lab from a small pilot project into an established, large-scale, technology-based course sequence.

Frederick W. Chapman’s Education

  • University of Waterloo (PhD, 2003)

Doctor of Philosophy , Applied Mathematics , 19982003

In my 326 page doctoral thesis, "Generalized Orthogonal Series for Natural Tensor Product Interpolation," I introduced a dozen original mathematical inventions in half a dozen different areas of mathematics, developed rigorous mathematical theories for all of them, and presented a variety of computational applications. The principal invention of my thesis is the "Geddes series expansion" (GSE), which I named in honor of my thesis supervisor, Prof. Keith O. Geddes. GSEs form a vast parameterized family of bilinear series expansions for multivariate functions — the number of degrees of freedom in the parameter space is uncountably infinite! The terms of a GSE are generated by a simple iterative algorithm based on a nonlinear "abstract splitting operator," which I also invented. GSEs have dozens of computational applications ranging from the fast and accurate approximation of high-dimensional multiple integrals to the automatic derivation and proof of multivariate identities.

  • University of Waterloo (MMath, 1998)

Master of Mathematics , Applied Mathematics , 19951998

In my 178 page master's thesis, "Theory and Applications of Dual Asymptotic Expansions," I introduced several original mathematical inventions, developed rigorous mathematical theories to support them, and presented a computational application in Maple. First, I invented the "dual asymptotic expansion" (DAE), which is a new kind of bilinear series expansion for multivariate functions. The terms of a DAE are generated by a simple iterative algorithm based on a nonlinear "asymptotic splitting operator," which I also invented. I used Maple to demonstrate a new technique for approximating special functions by elementary functions — expand the kernel of an integral representation in a DAE and then integrate termwise. My master's thesis was supervised by Prof. Keith O. Geddes, co-inventor of the Maple computer algebra system. My doctoral thesis (see above) built directly on my master's thesis and extended it considerably.

  • Lehigh University (BA, 1982)

Bachelor of Arts , Pure Mathematics , 19791982

I completed a very demanding four-year bachelor's degree program in three years — I majored in pure mathematics and took five elective courses in computer science. I was two years ahead of my classmates in mathematics and took junior-level mathematics courses in my freshman year. I was on the Dean's List every semester, graduated Magna Cum Laude, and was inducted into two national honor societies: Phi Beta Kappa (upon graduation) and Phi Eta Sigma (after freshman year).

  • Liberty High School (1979)

    Diploma , College Preparatory Track , 19771979

I attended seven different schools in twelve years of public education. In my final four years, I attended four different schools and twice changed schools in the middle of the school year. These tough challenges actually brought out the best in me — I graduated first in a high school class of over 500 students. During my senior year of high school, I was also a part-time student at Lehigh University, where I took two sophomore-level mathematics courses.
