A confession: I’m not a “first wave” kinda guy. You know, the earliest adopter of every trend, gizmo or popular ailment? Not me.
This is probably not a good confession for an “ad guy” to make. But nobody reads this profile (which I’ve turned into my off-again, on-again blog), anyway.
Which brings me to social media. The late word is now getting out, through social media I might add, that, really, from a straight-no-chaser business perspective, it isn’t really all that interesting.
Social media is one tool in the box. It’s not an appropriate tool for every job. And, sorry to say, it’s not going to save the ad business… because, for one thing, the ad business won’t need saving… come next year.
Okay… NOW we are talking. I hear the first wave receding, the ocean’s great drawing of breath.
I had me at ‘receding.’ Social media as seen here on LinkedIn or out there in the Twitmosphere is, for the most part, vacuous, vain or tricky. Life among the chatocrats.
But…
Acknowledge our basic need to relate and connect, and put the “channels” to do that within the framework of a new breed of business software, and you get the second wave of social media: conversations in the context of business processes.
