Florian Mueller's Summary

At age 42, Florian has already spent more than 25 years in business, in a wide variety of roles (most of them in IT) and with notable successes in every one of them. Over the last nine years, Florian's focus has been on intellectual property and related competition issues.

A few years ago, he also represented the political interests of Real Madrid, the most successful club in soccer history, with respect to a resolution of the European Parliament and a white paper of the European Commission.

As a campaigner for balanced patent policy, Florian won multiple awards (listed further below), including the EU Campaigner of the Year award against fellow nominee and U2 frontman Bono.

As a 15-year old, Florian started writing articles for computer magazines, and at age 16 became Germany's youngest computer book author. When he graduated from high school in 1989, he had already written ten books for a publisher later acquired by Viacom/Simon&Schuster and, subsequently, Pearson.

For about ten years, Florian specialized in transatlantic business, handling everything from product scouting to dealmaking to managing and coordinating licensing and distribution partnerships to localization to marketing, PR, sales management. Under Florian's auspices, now-famous games publisher Blizzard Entertainment first conquered the top spot of the sell-through charts (Warcraft II, Germany, 1996).

In 1996, Florian co-founded an online gaming & community software company and served as its CEO from the foundation of the company to its sale to a subsidiary of the Spanish Telefónica group in early 2000. The RivalNet service was offered in German, Spanish and Italian language versions.

From 2001 to 2004, Florian advised the CEO and other senior executives of MySQL AB, the maker of the namesake open-source database. In 1Q2008, MySQL AB was acquired by Sun Microsystems for $1 billion.

More recently he has focused on patent disputes surrounding smartphones, tablet computers and other gadgets.
