Felix Lu’s Summary

As co-Founder and vice-president of Applied Quantum Technologies, and a visiting research scientist at Duke University, I have the opportunity of being involved with several different projects and levels. On the business side, I am consistently involved in both administration of several SBIR/STTR contracts and the product and process development. As we grow in the next few years, bigger challenges such as managing more funds and personel will become more significant. It has been and I'm sure it will continue to be, an important first hand experience to go through. On the more scientific side, exciting developments such as band gap engineering of a wafer fused heterojuction and MEMS device optimization with applications in the quantum information sciences, biomedical engineering, and telecommunications areas continue to engage my interest and scientific development. Over the next several years, I hope to help grow Applied Quantum Technologies to include 2-5 additional employees and have several commercial products in development; and turn academic discoveries into practical commercial products.

My Ph.D. was in materials science from the University of California at San Diego. The thesis topic was on the electrical characterization of exfoliated (ion cut) films using thermal and mechanical methods to fabricate transistors for flat panel display applications. I had some experience with the design, simulation, fabrication and characterization of multilayer III-V low-loss optical waveguides. After all this, I worked for about 1.5 years at the Boeing Satellite development center in El Segundo, CA, working on reliability studies of SiGe and III-V HBTs and HEMTs for satellite electronics. Most recently, (as of Feb 2008) I worked at Duke University in the Dept of ECE as a research scientist with Professor Jungsang Kim.
