Evelyn Saenz’s Experience

  • Educational Consultant

    Independant

    (Privately Held; Internet industry)

    2007Present (2 years )

Squidoo provides the platform for me as an educational consultant and writer, to publish lesson plans, unit studies and hands-on learning ideas for teaching young children all across the curriculum. Gathering ideas from my 20+ years of experience teaching children in various capacities, I offer ideas and activities for teachers, homeschoolers and parents to keep children not only happy and active but also learning.

  • Outside Sales Associate

    Get Smart Super Store

    (Primary/Secondary Education industry)

    September 2008October 2008 (2 months)

Helped to plan for increased sales and marketing of an Educational Supply Store. Explored ways to improve store image, online sales, international sales as well as local sales.

Suggested innovative ways to increase in store traffic through promotion of educational materials at workshops and store displays.

Assisted customers with finding appropriate materials.

  • Kindergarten and First Grade Teacher

    Kids Learning Center

    (Primary/Secondary Education industry)

    December 2005June 2006 (7 months)

Taking a different theme each month the children learned to reading, writing and 'rithmetic through songs, hands-on experiments, art projects and music. They learned verbs by calling out words for the activities they were doing on the playground and demonstrated their knowledge of metamorphosis by creating dance movements. Though never quiet, this was a classroom full of learning.

By the end of the year, all children were reading, at or above grade level in all subjects and most importantly, excited about learning.

  • Owner/Operator

    Mamma Mia Restaurant

    (Restaurants industry)

    20022005 (3 years )

Mamma Mia was an Italian Restaurant the my husband and I started in Costa Rica. With no restaurant experience we started this business from scratch and built it to a successful operation employing up to 20 wait, kitchen and delivery staff.

As co-owner I was in charge of the Kitchen and marketing. With all original recipes, innovative promotions, and friendly atmosphere, our clientèle grew until we had many repeat costumers.

Our restaurant had a lovely view of the Costa Rican rainforest and was divided into small rooms. One of the rooms was especially for families with children where I provided educational games, toys and activities to keep the children amused while other rooms were perfect for young couples, groups of men relaxing after work or ladies meeting for coffee hour.

After our children had become fluent in Spanish we sold our restaurant and moved back to the USA.

  • Homeschool Facilitator

    Homeschool

    (Primary/Secondary Education industry)

    September 1994September 2001 (7 years 1 month)

As a Homeschool Facilitator, I arranged for my children to experience education and learn from the best educators.

My children learned about the ocean in the tide pools at national parks, from Marine Biologists at the Boston Aquarium and Paleontologists at Harvard Univ. They learned about great literature from reading books at the public library, meeting with other homeschoolers to discuss these works and demonstrated that knowledge by presenting those works on stage to sold out crowds.

As a result of my work facilitating her education, when my daughter entered seventh grade, her first year in school, she scored at a college reading level, was beginning Algebra II and had the poise and confidence to converse with people of all ages. She eventually graduated outstanding Senior of her High school class of 850+ students and is on the Dean's list at the college of her choice.

  • Sales Associate

    Children's Orchard

    (Retail industry)

    May 1990January 1992 (1 year 9 months)

Purchased and sold educational materials, toys, and clothing. Created and maintained a selection of open-ended educational games to entertain children of customers.

This was a used children's clothing store where the clients were generally young mothers who brought their children in while they shopped.

I attended the clients, bought and sold clothing and toys and maintained a space in the middle of the shop where the mothers could always see their children and provided hands-on educational materials to keep the children happily amused so that their mothers could relax and have the time to shop.

Having a playspace for the children increased clientèle as well as sales as mothers were able to take the time to shop. Many mothers said that they came to our shop for just this reason and through word of mouth brought in many more clients.

  • Teacher

    Turtle Island Day Care

    (Primary/Secondary Education industry)

    September 1985May 1986 (9 months)

Having just finished my student teaching, I worked at a daycare with children 6 weeks to 3 years old. With a baby on hip we sang songs, read stories, played in the leaves and painted with pudding and shaving cream.

Always believing that children needed a hands-on learning environment, I helped the other teachers come up with activities that involved all five senses.

  • Chapter 1 Teacher

    Jamaica Elementary School

    (Primary/Secondary Education industry)

    September 1984June 1985 (10 months)

As a Chapter One teacher in a small rural school I taught Kindergarten through Sixth graders. Phonics had not been taught in this school for many years so children throughout the grades needed help in this area. Rather than using just a textbook, the children and I found games and activities to use to make learning of the phonics rules fun.

We invented a game called Howl the Vowels where the child spells a word but instead of saying the vowel he or she points up to the moon with the correct vowel on it and howls the sound it makes.

Games make children excited about learning and keep their minds focused on inventing new ways to learn.

  • First Grade Teacher

    Lincoln School

    (Primary/Secondary Education industry)

    19831984 (1 year )

    Taught first grade

Until the day I walked in the class I thought the children would speak English. What I discovered was 27 beautiful, smart children. 2 spoke English, 1 Italian, 2 different dialects of Chinese and the rest Spanish. Meeting this challenge required me to invent ways to make the lessons come alive in visual hands-on ways without being able to rely on language.

Through songs, pictures, frustration and joy we made it through that year and a half. By the end of the year, each of the children learned to read and write in English. Most were able to converse at a basic level and all understood basic directions in English.

I read picture books to the children throughout the day, we drew pictures to help eachother understand and acted out stories to show understanding. These children taught me a way of teaching that brings life to each lesson, joy to the eyes of the children and true understanding that comes from experience, not textbooks.

Evelyn Saenz’s Education

  • Johnson State College

    Education 19861986

Taking Educational courses at Johnson enabled me to finish the requirements to receive my teaching certificate from the State of Vermont.

  • University of Vermont

    Education 19851985

During the summer of 1985 I fell in love with Mathematics. Though I was always an excellent math student, the numbers meant nothing to me until I discovered wooden Cuisenaire Rods and their ability to make music.

These wooden blocks are cut precisely so that when dropped they play the musical scale.

From this moment on I have looked for and found millions of ways to make math come alive for my students. Math is everywhere from the spirals on a pine cones to the patterns on recycled Christmas paper. In the fall I took this newfound love to my Student Teaching assignment where I discovered Mathematics Their Way and never looked back.

  • Castleton State College

    Education 19841984

The reading and languages arts class that I took at Castleton introduced me to Big Books and ways to use Whole Language methods in the classroom. These ideas have evolved into my adoption of methods such as Read the Room and Write the Room learning centers.

  • Community College of Vermont

    Education 19841984

  • University of Vermont

    BA , Anthropology , 19761980

Though I started my career at UVM with a major in Anthropology, I soon realized that my true calling was education. Starting in my Junior year I began to use all my electives to take teaching courses. I graduated with a BA in Anthropology and then continued taking education courses at various universities until finally obtaining my first teaching certificate from the State of Vermont in 1986.

  • Johnson State College

    Anthropology 19751976

A semester a Johnson assured me that I was able to handle college so I transfered to the University of Vermont looking for more academic challenge.
