Intern at Pettygrove Classical Chinese Medicine Clinic
Portland, Oregon Area
I went through two degrees as an undergraduate. The first was in Biology, where I had a keen interest in both environmental science and molecular genetics. The second, my real love, was Philosophy. In Oregon State University's philosophy department I learned how to think and how to write. I studied Western philosophy for the most part, focusing on ethics and critical theory. However, I was not destined for a career in academic philosophy it seems, despite my attempt to complete a Masters degree in Applied Ethics. Instead, I found my way to Classical Chinese Medicine and the National College of Natural Medicine. I've never really looked back.
While at NCNM, I have participated in research, achieved at a high academic level and have developed ever deepening professional relationships with my peers and mentors. I am primarily interested in Chinese formula science, as laid out by Zhang Zhong Jing in his Shang Han Za Bing Lun. I am interested in treating chronic and acute diseases, particularly various cancers, HIV/AIDS and common illnesses such as colds and flus. My partner, Amanda Barp (LMT) and I will be opening a clinic in the Sellwood area of Portland, OR in the Fall of 2009. From there, I hope to increase the public's knowlege of the power of Chinese medicine through various educational offerings as well as showing people how they can introduce the principles of Chinese medicine into their daily lives.
Quickly, another passion of mine is blogging - particularly blogging about natural health. You can see my work at http://deepesthealth.com. I hope to soon unveil a course for natural health practitioners about the power and importance of blogging.

In school I am focusing on Chinese formula science, studying chiefly with Arnaud Versluys (http://www.arnaudversluys.com). I also consider Heiner Fruehauf to be one of my mentors, particularly insofar that I am attempting to understand the deeper symbolism behind both the acupuncture points and the general theory of Chinese medicine. In the Student Government Assocation (SGA) I was President of my class two years running and am going for President of the entire SGA next year (2008-2009). With some of my colleagues, I began the NCNM student chapter of the AAAOM, one of the first student chapters in the country.

I was heavily involved in a variety of leadership activities on campus, listed below. I was particularly involved academically, however, obtaining several scholarships and a fellowship and maintaining over a 3.5 GPA while also raising my young daughter.
