Andrew Eells’s Experience

  • Web Development Team Lead

    TUI UK

(Public Company; Leisure, Travel & Tourism industry)

    November 2008Present (9 months)

I am responsible for 10 of TUI Travel's ski and lakes websites including www.crystalski.co.uk, www.thomsonski.co.uk and firstchoice-ski.co.uk. These generate about 300,000 bookings per annum.
As well as responsibility for production systems, I am currently the technical lead in an Agile team re-architecting the TUI web platform.

  • Technical Team Lead

    BView

(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Internet industry)

    January 2007August 2008 (1 year 8 months)

Technical Team Lead on a greenfield b2b / b2c project that successfully launched Q1 2008. The aim of the company is to disrupt the UK search market utilising a mix of best-in-class data provision and social networking capabilities. As of writing www.bview.co.uk has 10,000 visitors daily.

My role was to recruit and run the Technology team (7 direct reports including 4 Java / web developers) as well as maintain responsibility for the overall technical architecture of the site.

  • Senior Java Developer

    Xbridge

(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Internet industry)

    20042006 (2 years)

I spent 2 and a half years at Xbridge working my way through various projects and up to Senior Developer.

The biggest achievement I feel I took away from Xbridge was probably not technical, rather I am proud to have helped to change the culture of the company from a tech-startup to a stage where it is able to compete as a leading provider of UK online insurance brokering.

The most interesting project of note for me personally was probably the 6 months I spent outside the development process as part of a Database Taskforce Team, working closely with the Architect and the Systems Team, attempting to bring some clarity and scalability to the Oracle database (schema refactoring, performance enhancements, data integrity, migration etc).

  • Java / J2EE Developer

    Virtue Fusion

(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Gambling & Casinos industry)

    20022004 (2 years)

This small and fast-paced interactive gaming development company enabled me to break out of the larger company environment and learn to recognise which of the techniques and practices I had learnt in a large-scale application development environment could be brought to bear and successfully employed in a much more streamlined business.

Again, what really excited me about this opportunity was the possibility of working with some experienced and keen Senior Developers and Architects.

  • Java / Web Developer

    Prudential

    (Internet industry)

    19992002 (3 years)

After joining Prudential's Graduate Recruitment Programme, I was selected in 2000 to join the new "dot-com" department, formed in partnership with Andersen Consulting (now Accenture). The relationship with Andersen's introduced me to some extremely professional colleagues which coupled with the support from the Prudential gave me a very solid grounding in internet application development techniques and practices.

After a couple of months bespoke training at Sun's Training Centre on London Bridge, i spent some weeks cutting my teeth on a web-TV insurance application, followed by a leading role in launching egg's Life and Critical Illness Cover website.

I also worked with some exceptional architects as part of the Middleware Enablement Project - the design and build of a strategic J2EE framework to enable a platform for various Customer Service applications.
