Director of Presence
My mission is to re-humanize healthcare delivery & to advance health while making it fun and easy (for individuals & for organizations)... with expertise in health innovation & education and the strategic use of humor, influence, entrepreneurship, and gaming.
Specialties: internal medicine, hospital medicine, cardiac surgery co-management, public speaking, influence, hypnosis, persuasion, rapport-building, internet marketing, direct response copywriting, information product creation, medical education, medical humor, creative thinking, membership site creation, mobile game design (plus I home school 6 kids... so add in time management :)
Responsible for catalyzing an innovation culture in the MedStar Health distributed care network. This is accomplished through the strategic nurturing of virtual (web, mobile, social media), public (innovation-in-residence, public speaking, seminars, workshops), and interpersonal (one-on-one connections, rapport-building, persuasion, influence) relationships.
Responsible for the development and maintenance of http://mi2.org and MI2's internal social collaboration "MI2 Sense" (pronounced "my 2 cents").
Creator of the Innovator-in-Residence program and MedStar App Services.
Works closely with Cleveland Clinic Innovations' Health IT Commercialization Team for creating and evaluating mobile technologies and apps. Serves as one of Google's "Glass Explorers".
Assist physicians, nurses, mid-levels, executives, administrators and all who work in healthcare to learn the persuasive arts for better communication and better care delivery/connection - essentially, becoming more "present".
Conduct “Influence Consults” that touch every element of healthcare - Such consults have already reached diverse healthcare domains including resident recruitment, patient adherence, philanthropic efforts, patient education, professional op-ed writing, bedside manner, conflict management and the opening of new healthcare delivery facilities.
Mobile games and app development. "Big Goose Egg" refers to "zero" as most Big Goose Egg games are free to download. Games include Newtons Nightmare, Guano! The Bird Targeting Game, H2Whoooa! Water Maze, and others.
Supervise nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and internal medicine physicians in a co-management, hospitalist program dedicated to post-operative open-heart care. Perform inpatient medicine consults and provide hospitalist care for cardiac procedure patients.
Physician partner contracted with MedStar Health to serve as the Medical Director of a medicine/cardiac surgery co-management hospitalist service. Served on numerous hospital & health system committees including the Medical Executive Committee, Ethics, Cardiac Surgery Operations, Throughput, Performance Improvement, CME, among others.
A different kind of health innovation... well-intentioned learning of rapport and influence strategies from not-so-well-intentioned people like pickup artists, cult leaders, and con men.
This talk explores the role of emotions, body language, word choice, and more on our influence skills in healthcare. If we are truly about the health of the patient, then we will communicate and connect in such a way that affords improving health and maintaining wellness.
The people who are best at performing tasks and procedures are not necessarily the best at teaching them. Find out why your best-performing nurse is not necessarily the best one to teach nursing students. Find out why your organization's best heart surgeon make be completely incompetent in another role. Find out why creating appropriate moments of mindfulness are are the sweet spots for health innovations and reducing medical error.
Bugs on Scrubs is a medical humor text that rhymes like a kids book, but instructs better than nursing competencies and doctor journal reviews. Infection control topics from scrubs outside to hand-washing, from eating at the nurses' station to wearing ties... it's all there. But this time as an argument between a doctor and a nurse... with an interesting (but all too familiar) twist at the end.
Served on the Board of Directors for Women In Transition (WIT) a non-profit organization that provides counseling, information, and referral services for women and their families in the Philadelphia area. Organized the RADAR Training Conference for Philadelphia-area medical students to learn how to screen for domestic violence.
