¹ Held since 1970, the Jenckes Cup Closing Argument Competition is the oldest and most prestigious law school oral advocacy competition in Arizona. Arizona Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers judge it. Each fall, The University of Arizona College of Law (UA Law) and Arizona State University College of Law (ASU Law) select their two best student orators to compete. The winning team's names are engraved on the Jenckes Cup, a traveling trophy. In 2008, the teams prepared plaintiff's (ASU Law) and defendant's (UA Law) closing arguments for a personal injury case. In 2009, the teams prepared state prosecutor's (UA Law) and defendant's (ASU Law) closing arguments for an accomplice to rape case.
² Each fall, UA Law holds an internal competition to select its Team for the annual Jenckes Cup Competition against ASU Law. Tucson Defense Bar trial lawyers judge the final round and select the top two for the UA Law Jenckes Cup Team. In 2008, students prepared plaintiff's closing arguments for a false imprisonment case. In 2009, they prepared plaintiff's closing arguments for a contract breach and misrepresentation case.
³ Held each spring, the Richard Grand Damages Closing Argument Competition is open only to UA Law students. Trial lawyers and UA Law faculty judge it. Students prepare and deliver plaintiffs' closing arguments focusing on non-economic and punitive damages. In 2009, students prepared closing arguments for a products liability and wrongful death case.
