Ellie The Nomad’s Summary

Ellie the Nomad's work is focused on Japanese Rope Bondage, kinbaku-bi, and the associated creation of intimate spaces which explore the interplay of control, objectification and meditation. Although seen occasionally at clubs and events all over the UK and abroad, little of her photographic work is done in that milieu. The majority of the photographs in her gallery were shot at her own studio in the East Midlands.

Ellie uses natural fibre rope, most often jute or hemp of 5mm diameter, although other materials, such as raw cotton, seagrass, rawhide, flax and horsehair also feature occasionally. Her style is distinctly Japanese, yet quite unique in its extraordinary combination of technical Puritanism and sensual freedom. Her photography reflects both the sensitivity and the depth of the bond she has with her subjects, and the simple joy and beauty of this hojojutsu-inspired artform.

In the field of fine art, Ellie’s collaboration with Midlands artist Rachel Collins was seen at “The Chair” exhibition in Birmingham’s Mailbox centre. Her photographs also supported Rachel’s later exhibition and performance art at the UCE in the same city.

As a performance artist she has worked with musicians Wajid Yaseen, Alice Kemp and Yoshi Shinagawa of Uniform, both at Nottinghill Arts Club and as part of Guerilla Zoo. Ellie the Nomad has also featured twice at Skin Two Expo (Barbican Centre) and at Kinkfest, Kinklusive, the International Womens’ SM Conference and numerous clubs around the UK.

As an educator, Ellie has been a regular contributor of dojos and workshops to both national and regional organisations.. She was a guest presenter at the Austin Ropecraft Symposium, Texas in December 2005 and again at Shibaricon, Chicago in May 2006. She was a founding supporter of the UK Rope Bondage Peer Worshops and organiser of the bondage playground at Kinkfest 2, a celebration of alternative lifestyles held in London at the end of July 2005.
