I'm an AS3/Flex/AIR/RIA expert, with well-regarded accomplishments in the field. Seeking contracts or possible permanent position. Worldwide. Development, Technical leadership, Research or University lecturer. A role that ignites my enthusiasm and makes good use of my talents.
1980: Designed and built, from scratch, my first computer. A four bit machine, programmed in binary, with lights and switches on the front.
1986: Graduated from the University of Manchester (UK). Joined BT Laboratories. Became involved in the ‘Skyphone’ development.

1989: Involved in standardisation for the first Pan-European Digital Mobile (GSM) standard and CCITT standards committees in the USA.
1989: My Voice Activity Detector for mobile telephony use which became a European Standard. This algorithm is still implemented in every GSM mobile phone worldwide. (There are over 3.3 billion phones, and most are GSM).
1989: Awarded the ‘IPU4+ Inventors Prize’ by the Intellectual Property Unit of BT for patented inventions. I was the youngest person ever to receive this award.
1993: Obtained an MSc in Telecommunications from the University of Essex.
1994: Transferred to the Cybernetics Group, working on Artificial Intelligence and Genetic Algorithms.
1996: Studied fine arts and design. Got into film-making.

(Computer Software industry)
October 2008 — Present (1 year 2 months)
My Flex, ActionScript 3 and AIR expertise is for hire. I'm primarily serving Asia. Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Taiwan, etc. But I will also consider contracts further afield.
I have also put together a course in ActionScript3 and Flex. I've run this course once for Java and AS2 programmers, and it was very well received. The course can be customised to your requirements.
(Still seeking the right permanent position worldwide)
(Higher Education industry)
January 2008 — July 2008 (7 months)
I taught Software Engineering in Beijing, on a course endorsed by Mohawk College in Canada. I taught five courses:-
1. Object Oriented Programming (C++ and OpenGL)
2. Advanced Visual Programming (Visual Basic and Microsoft SQL Server)
3. Software Engineering Project (Planning and Management)
4. Technologies and Programming for E-Commerce II (PHP, MySQL, Dreamweaver and Fireworks)
5. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML, AJAX, ASP.NET C# Microsoft Visual Studio, IIS, SQL Server, ActiveX and ADOs.
I stayed only one semester because of concerns about the administration and plagiarism.
(Internet industry)
2002 — 2006 (4 years )
(Formerly a sole-trader business "i2genius". I established the company in 2004). e2easy is still in existence, but I haven't done anything with it since 2006.
In Australia, I focussed my attention on commercial web service design. I have worked on e-learning, e-commerce, and consumer-oriented web applications. In 2002, I became interested in the pioneering field of Rich Internet Applications.
In 2006 and 2007, I created several Flash-based e-learning applications for teaching English, but I have yet to refine these into sell-able products.
Lately, I've been working on some sophisticated Adobe AIR applications.
(Higher Education industry)
1997 — 2001 (4 years )
Formerly a partnership. Registered as a company in 1999. Under the auspices of my training company, I created several training courses involving Multimedia, Website Creation, Video Production, Post-Production, Video Graphics, and Music Production. I managed the accreditation and recognition of these courses through the National Open College Network.
Simultaneously, I also worked as a consultant for Signals Media Arts (Colchester, UK).
As well as teaching video production skills, I was personally involved in independent film making. In 1997, I secured arts funding to produce a short film, and CD-ROM. In 2000, I was awarded a commission to produce Video Art for Millennium Dome in London.
(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; BT; Telecommunications industry)
1986 — 1996 (10 years )
I worked on a number of research projects, often collaborating with universities, and international organisations.
My crowning accomplishment was my involvement in the DTI (UK Department of Trade and Industry) funded GSM mobile phone project. This involved collaboration with European telecommunications providers and manufacturers to define the first standard for digital GSM phones. There was an international competition for the best solution for a "Voice Activity Detector". My algorithm won, and is implemented in every GSM mobile phone.
In 1989, I was awarded the ‘IPU4+ Inventors Prize’ by the Intellectual Property Unit of BT for patented inventions. I was the youngest person ever to receive this award.
The management and organisational experience that I gained working for BT have been an invaluable asset in my subsequent career.
BA , Art and Design , 1996 — 1998
I attending this course mostly because of interest for the subject. By 1998, my extra-curricular activities had become so successful, that I dropped out of art school, to set up my multimedia training company.
MSc , Telecommunications and Information Systems , 1991 — 1993
BSc (Hons) , Computer Engineering , 1983 — 1986
Walking, Camping, Travel, The Arts, Exercise and Fitness. Never enough hours in the day to pursue all the interests I'd like to. I like to keep abreast of technology. When I get the time, I'd like to look into the following:- Update my Adobe AIR applications to exploit new features in Flash 10 player. Play with Irrlicht and Unity games engines. Look into Google gears. Learn Ruby on Rails. Develop an application for the iPhone / iPod touch.
1989: Awarded the ‘IPU4+ Inventors Prize’ by the Intellectual Property Unit of BT for patented inventions. I was the youngest person ever to receive this award.
The Voice Activity Detector that I developed has been incorporated into every GSM mobile phone. There are over 3.3 billion mobiles phones worldwide, and most are based on the GSM standard. Few engineers can claim to have created something with such wide-spread use.
