My core skill, honed over a lifetime, is the ability to quickly grasp technical issues, understand how complex systems work and figure out how to fix or improve them. The toughest problems are the most interesting. I'm also a craftsman; I really like working with my hands. These abilities have translated beautifully to solving problems on recreational boats. I was a late bloomer, finally building a decent career after a fairly disastrous college experience. I'm mostly self-taught in the best sense. I've gone from being a suit to being a tradesman and, while I had a lot of fun in the suit, I like this better.
An entirely self-taught electrical engineer (for all practical purposes,) I suppose I'm an autodidact. I have insatiable curiosity coupled with an ability to spot and fill holes and resolve some of the worst contradictions in my internal reality model. It's so bad I had to stop the newspaper because it became an irrelevant distraction.
I can fix anything fixable, including some things that cannot not be conventionally repaired. I'm learning what should be left broken because repairing it only creates more problems.
I am currently teaching a course in electronic charting systems and radar at Saddleback College in Mission, Viejo, CA
I qualified as a Certified Marine Electrical Technician in 2007, one of about 150 in the country.
