Dustin Gooding’s Experience

  • Project Manager

    NASA

(Government Agency; 10,001 or more employees; Aviation & Aerospace industry)

    January 2008Present (1 year 7 months)

MOD: Systems Engineering and Facility Integration Office

Managing a handful of IT projects in an R&D lab that acts as a stepping-stone for technology insertion into the Mission Control Center. Mostly working with vendors, testing products, developing visions and implementation plans.

On the side, I'm helping to start a "NextGen" way of doing business at NASA by integrating social networking, Web 2.0 knowledge capture, and the younger workforce (e.g., GenY) into our current business practices.

  • Data Analyst

    NASA

(Government Agency; 10,001 or more employees; Aviation & Aerospace industry)

    January 2004December 2007 (4 years)

    MOD: Management Services Office

My first right-out-of-college job. General purpose IT/programmer. Did a little Windows 2003 system administration, a little bit of integrating Linux into Windows AD, and a good bit of writing web applications.

Most of the web applications were written in ASP (though I prefer other languages) and replaced paper-driven processes with stateful web apps. I also wrote a few data visualization applications that provided better views of data captured by other 3rd party programs.

Near the end, after a few rotations, I also worked with our directorate's IT Security team, handling incidents, dealing with vulnerabilities, and helping with Certification and Accreditation of our IT systems.

  • Rotation - IT Security

    NASA

(Government Agency; 10,001 or more employees; Aviation & Aerospace industry)

    May 2006May 2007 (1 year 1 month)

Rotational assignment to IRD: CIO Office.

Worked with the Center's IT Security group. Helped with major incidents, from both high and low levels. Grepped and Perled through GBs of log files. Created automatically updating attack maps. Designed an IT Security wiki for dispersed communication and knowledge capture.

Project manager for a Center-wide server and application log consolidation system. I gathered requirements, and I designed, implemented and advertised the system.

Also entered the KM world, setting up a Center-wide general-purpose wiki.

  • Rotation - Programmer

    NASA

(Government Agency; 10,001 or more employees; Aviation & Aerospace industry)

    August 2004May 2005 (10 months)

Rotational assignment to MOD: Advanced Operations Development Division.

I wrote two proof-of-concept applications dealing with audio and video in the Mission Control Center. With regard to audio, we were only utilizing half of our MP3 encoders for streaming voice audio (voice being mono, encoders being stereo). I wrote a Python app that utilized LAME to break out a dual-mono MP3 stream (one mono voice signal into each stereo channel) into two mono MP3 streams. This effectively doubled our MP3 encoder capacity in about 100 lines of code (plus LAME).

With regard to video, we were decoding in-house-format streaming video from ISS downlink using black boxes from a vendor that no longer existed. I wrote a C application that mimicked the black boxes (taking in CCSDS packets, spitting out video frames). All I had to go on was a poorly written technical manual for the black box, and a handful of CCSDS packet captures containing video.

(Educational Institution; 10,001 or more employees; Higher Education industry)

    September 2001December 2002 (1 year 4 months)

IT guy in Department of Statistics

Worked with an integrated Windows and Linux environment, helping faculty and staff with computer issues. In charge of prepping old equipment for excess (wiping hard drives, etc.). Created and deployed computer images using Altiris. First time I ever heard of and used regular expressions.
