Bart Du Bois's Summary
Application architect, active at the level of segment architecture. I am committed to harmonizing the objectives and constraints of individual development projects with the principles and standards of the Target Architecture.
Previously, I focused on pragmatic implementations of Enterprise Architecture practices, relying on TOGAF. My goal is to facilitate alignment between business and IT by structuring/enhancing the process for architecture creation and the management of Enterprise Architecture content.
In this work, I rely on my previous experience as a senior researcher in the domain of reengineering.

September 2008 – September 2009 (1 year 1 month)
Application Architect in the Finances branch of the Application Services department.
Some highlights:
Performed a migration prestudy at a large bank, investigating the potential reduction of the effort needed to move clients to a newer release of a framework that was no longer backwards compatible (relying on automated transformations to a code generator).
Participated in the preparation of an architecture course for another large bank.
Led the start-up of the Service-Oriented Architecture solution, and was responsible for presales in this area.
Contributed to various bids, as subject matter expert as well as editor. My last assignment wa a (succesful) bid on the outsourcing of a large .NET application portfolio, for which I participated in the intake analysis, among others through interviews.
Senior researcher
University of Antwerp
Educational Institution; 1001-5000 employees; Research industry
October 2006 – August 2008 (1 year 11 months)
I am participating in the Software Evolution, Refactoring, Improvement of Operational & Usable Systems (SERIOUS) project. SERIOUS is organized in the context of the Information Technology for European Advancement (ITEA) programme. The ITEA programme is today the leading transnational European co-operative R&D programme in software-intensive systems.
The focus of this position is on the knowledge-transfer and the application of existing know-how in an industrial setting.
I am coordinating the contributions of our research group (the Lab On Reengineering, LORE) with regard to the workpackage on Quality-Driven Evolution. More specifically, I am investigating the relationship between internal and external metrics together with national and international industrial partners, and am studying the way refactorings can be used to improve quality.
PhD candidate
University of Antwerp
Educational Institution; 1001-5000 employees; Research industry
October 2002 – October 2006 (4 years 1 month)
In my PhD, I have addressed the question of how refactoring affects internal and external program quality attributes. On the one hand, I have performed empirical research on comprehension improvements through the use of refactorings that disentangle the structure of a software system. On the other hand, I have exploited a formalized description of refactorings and software metrics to enable (i) the prediction of the impact of a given refactoring candidate on a number of coupling and cohesion metrics; and (ii) the identification of those refactoring candidates that will improve coupling and cohesion.
