CFO at muchBeta
Portugal
I have a special relationship with the information technology and computers industry. I remember the first PC I used in 1987: it was a XEROX with CPM/M operating system and BASIC programming language. I also remember here the first PC with MS-DOS that I used (it was a Zenith), the DBMS dBASE II and III, Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet, Windows 3.1, the first time I used the Internet with a dial-up modem with a stunning velocity 9.6 kbit/s. Great times!
I also have special skills for accounting and financial reporting and analyses. I like the accounting world with it´s E=mc2 equation: Assets = Liabilities + (Shareholders or Owners equity). The double-entry bookkeeping system is for me one of the great inventions of human kind.
After 10 years since I began to work, I managed to work in a dream company: MuchBeta. Here I found a internet company where I am the CFO.
Accounting, financial reporting, budget control, fiscal procedures, good computer skills and power user of Excel.
(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Internet industry)
June 2008 — Present (1 year 6 months)
My new love: muchBeta and back to the Internet.
Here I am the CFO and also responsible for our selling channel via Google Adwords.
So let´s create the buzz: it will start in October 2008.
(Graphic Design industry)
September 2006 — May 2008 (1 year 9 months)
I loved to work in this company. Please see their fantastic 3D computer graphics animation and pictures at http://www.lt-studios.com/.
I was responsible for the accounting (financial and cost accounting), payroll and for the account receivable and payable. It was a hard job because in Portugal clients pay very late but I managed to have 30 days receivable.
I am still the accountant of LT Studios.
(Hospital & Health Care industry)
2005 — 2006 (1 year )
Public sector … I developed reports for the Hospital Administration. They needed to know the production and financial performance of the medical and surgical departments.
It was the time of DRG (Diagnosis-related group), ICD-9 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems), Case-Mix index, Ambulatory care, etc.
I left when I went to the Women Surgical Department and saw the condition of the bathroom used by the ladies being treated. In some cases, financial reports don´t mean nothing.
(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Information Technology and Services industry)
2001 — 2004 (3 years )
Another buzzword: B2B. I moved to Lisbon to work in this marketplace based in the Commerce One and SAP software. It was a big investment for Portuguese standards: 12 million €.
How I tried to sell B2B solution… but I was not easy. We managed to have some success with the auction tool. Some clients had saving of 20% to 40%. I still believe that reverse auction is a valid tool.
(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Information Technology and Services industry)
2000 — 2001 (1 year )
Yes … it´s was the time of the dot com boom. Six month later, the crash. I learned a new word: downsizing.
(Computer Software industry)
1996 — 2000 (4 years )
After leaving the bohemian life of university, I founded with a cousin this little software house. Officially I had the commercial and financial sector but life was hard: I was secretary, accountant, commercial, janitor man, phone operator, etc.
I learned that 2 people can make great thinks: we managed to work with the major hospitals in Portugal.
I left the company because I also had a great lesson: never to go after only one big deal.
