Scientist, Entrepreneur, New Product Evangelist, CEO, Consultant, and Author
I received my Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Caltech in 1996. After leaving Caltech, I have been on the business side of science. I have worked in at least 4 start-ups, twice serving as CEO. I have also served as a consultant to dozens of companies in the laboratory reagents and diagnostics markets. I usually concentrate on the focus of the executive team, industry relationship development, fund-raising, investor management and developing collaborations or acquisitions.
The entrepreneurial urge hit while I was at Caltech and it has never left. During graduate school, I would compare offerings from various suppliers to find the best item at the best price for the lab. That led to the concept of what was then a novel database driven online purchasing system website for life science products and Anderson Unicom Group (AUG). AUG grew from a concept in 1994 to a full-fledged business, competing with much larger companies by 1996.
In 2000, BioCarta, a San Diego based immunology products company acquired the assets of AUG and asked me to stay on and, later, to run the operation. I concentrated on improving supplier and customer confidence and arranged for additional funding to grow the operation.
While I continue to consult with many early stage companies, I have been busy writing. In May of 2007 Maps for Modern Magellans: Charts for Captains of Commerce was released. The series is written for people who feel frustrated after starting a business and then realizing they need help but believe they do not have time to read a business book to get that help. Every chapter of this series can stand on its own. The reader does not have to finish the entire book to benefit from it. The maps, charts, and diagrams are designed to help business owners, and managers, better grasp and communicate important business principles.

I work specifically with appropriate companies in Orange County to increase networking opportunities, membership enrollment, increase use of purchasing services, and improve attendance at programs. Orange County has a dynamic and active medical device, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical community. Unlike other areas of the country it is under-appreciated at this time.

MP Biomedicals (Formerly ICN Biomedicals), is a privately-held $XX million life science reagents and diagnostics company. This division was responsible for over 30% of the MP Biomedicals revenue in 2003. Products included antibodies, antigens, peptide inhibitors, substrates, cell biology media, solid and liquid media and sera, labware and plasticware. Was instrumental in the acquisition of Qbiogene ($16 million in sales). With Qbio, the Division sales grew to over 60% of the sales for the non-diagnostics portion of the company in 2004. Major focus was developing new products and procedures for new products to revamp the corporate image.

BioCarta, is a Proteomic research reagents company. I joined the company in 2000 to direct the growth and development of the ecommerce and web site portions of the business. In October of 2002, after the company had spent the initial $6 million in funding, I was asked to attempt to restore or salvage the company. I determined the best course of action to be a merger of three companies owned or partially controlled by the BioCarta board of Directors; BioCarta, Orbigen Inc. and Gene May (all in San Diego). Restored confidence in the company among partners, customers, suppliers, employees and investors. BioCarta sales increased 4X over previous year - $300K to $1.2 million (not including new partners).

November 1994 — September 2000 (5 years 11 months)
Before the world knew there was a World Wide Web I started a service to connect scientists and suppliers in the lab reagent world. I managed all functions of this internet/e-commerce start-up all the way to wrap-up and sale to BioCarta. Raised over $4.0 million in capital that allowed us to work smart and compete with companies that had $100 million in pre-IPO funding. Managed the entire operation in the initial 4 years before hiring a CEO in order to devote more time to information technology and business development. Constructed the most comprehensive database of products for the life-sciences market, with over one million detailed items from over 10,000 suppliers. Wrote core computer programs, designed the user-interface and initialized data editing process

PhD, Molecualr Biology, July 1987 — July 1995
Worked in the lab of Eric Davidson. Isolated Replication Factor A 70 Kd sub-unit based on a previously unidentified site-specific double stranded DNA binding activity. Established that RFA 70KD subunit binds to a 72 bp inverted repeat that exists in the s. purpuratus genome >100X The initial discovery of the repeat sequence was observed upstream of an early marker of tissue differentiation in the sea urchin embryo.
