(Public Company; Utilities industry)
May 1998 — October 2007 (9 years 6 months)
Perform design reviews of PBMR plant SSC in terms of compliance with nuclear safety and industry requirements (compliance is verified against User Requirement Specifications, the NGC, as well as against international standards - ANSI, IEEE, NRC, IAEA, EPRI, etc.)
Determine the scope of reviews to be performed externally, compile review specifications, provide support to engineering substantiation studies, and locate competent resources for the verification of technically challenging designs.
Monitor the progress of design review activities, track design deficiencies and risks, and compile/maintain reports.
Review and/or compile Safety Case documentation facilitating the licensing of a PBMR Demonstration Power Plant (this involves activities, such as hazard identification, fault-tree analyses [FTA], FMECA / HAZOP analyses, deterministic/probabilistic analyses and qualitative risk assessments, safety case preparation, safety evaluations and justifications, accident sequence assessments and analyses, stress analyses, design basis substantiations, external hazard assessments, fire safety analyses, “ALARA” / “DID” / “single failure criterion” / “redundancy-diversity-independence” application analyses, etc).
Co-ordinate licensing documentation review and submission to the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) for assessment (as part of the PBMR Safety Case and Licence-to-Construct the PBMR DPP application).
Compile process governing documentation regarding Configuration Control/Management, Design Control, Safety Management, Safety Case and SAR Control, Plant Modifications Safety Evaluation, Design & Licensing Bases Control, etc.
Co-ordinate program tasks between the Utility and PBMR (Pty) Ltd in the area of Verification and Validation (V&V) of Computer Codes and Models used in the Safety Case.
Mentor Utility development staff and provide on-job training (includes lectures to postgraduates who follow the Nuclear Engineers Course programme).
