Dorian Speed's Summary

I enjoy (almost) everything about web design: creating graphics, working with the "under the hood" stuff, and copywriting. I'd love to help you with any or all of these services. My primary focus is WordPress web design, which means I can make you a website you can easily update by yourself.

I also write a faith-based blog on Catholic education, family, and culture.

I'm passionate about teaching, whether in a formal classroom setting or in providing support for website clients.

Specialties: Web design and development based on the Genesis framework for WordPress, writing on a variety of topics, teaching, catechesis.

Dorian Speed's Publications

  • Music in the Civil War: A Common Language for a Divided Nation

    • Learning Through History
    • May 2007
    Authors: Dorian Speed

At the beginning of the Civil War, there were so few songs written for the conflict that soldiers on both sides of the conflict resorted to singing tunes from other wars, including “La Marseillaise” – the anthem of the French Revolution! Yet, by the end of the war, more music had been composed and performed than during all of the earlier wars in the history of the United States. People sang to boost the morale of the troops, to spread the news of major events, to express their sorrow in time of loss, and to celebrate their moments of victory. Examine the war through the eyes of different fictional characters to see the different roles that music played at the time.

  • Gregorian Chant: Music with a Lasting Legacy

    • Learning Through History
    • September 2007
    Authors: Dorian Speed

For the people of the Early Middle Ages, music was just as vital a part of everyday life as it is today – perhaps even more, since they had to perform it themselves instead of just hitting the “play” button. Read how one of the most influential forms of Western music was developed during this time, and in a place you might not expect – the monasteries and parish churches throughout Europe.

  • Missionary Involvement in the Columbian Exchange

    • The Trinity Review (literary magazine of Trinity University)
    • April 1996
    Authors: Dorian Speed

Examines the role of Catholic missionaries in the conquest of the Americas. Awarded the Philip W. Detweiler prize from the Trinity University Department of History.
