Richard Pineger’s Summary

The UK is a fickle market for component content management. In general, decision makers need educating before they can make budget decisions and, as a result, the uptake is somewhere between slow and non-existent. This is a shame, not only because that is my chosen field of work but also because of the hundreds of wasted hours of effort which add up to wasted lives amongst my technical author and translation colleagues. We only have one life, why waste it copying and pasting when we could be reusing and writing-fresh.

As a result, and in view of the recession, I have decided to focus on my first love - Technical Writing. My current work is actually fascinating, being concerned with the cutting edge of scientific instruments for biological analysis. I'm working back in Framemaker, Robohelp and MadCap Flare using nothing more advanced than Visual SourceSafe for version control and storage.

I'm treating this as a short break from managing writing work, and from Component Content Management Systems (CCMS) for technical communicators. I am maintaining my interest though and my connections throughout the Component Content Management industry so that when the economy starts to pick up, I'll be ready to pick up those opportunities with tools like Author-it.
